Why are Sea Turtles going extinct.

Sea Turtles are being poached for their eggs, skin, meat, and shells. Another reason is growing pollution in the ocean. There are oil spills that contaminate the water and will eventually kill off the Sea Turtles within a certain radius. It can also degrade their nesting habitat on the shore. Sea Turtles can also be affected by consuming contaminated foods. There have also been instances where plastic dumped into the ocean have also affected the Sea Turtles by getting in their nose and by being ingested.

How will the extinction of Sea Turtles affect the ecosystem of the ocean and their importance.

Beach and dune biomes may be affected. Since the sand in the systems cannot hold nutrients very well, they partially rely on the nests of Sea Turtles failing so that the baby turtles that got trapped can be absorbed by the soil. The nutrients the sand absorbed are used by dune plants so that they can grow. Sea Turtles also consume some sea grass beds actually increasing the productivity of the beds. Some species of Sea Turtles eat sea sponges. This helps control the population of the sponges from getting too high. Sea Turtles do not only help animals lower in the food chain, Sea Turtles also contribute to animals above itself in the food chain. If Sea Turtles went extinct, beach and dune biomes may not have enough nutrients to support vegetation, sea sponges will become overpopulated, and predators will not have as large of a variety of prey to consume. This could knock the entire ocean's ecosystem out of balance.

What we can do to save Sea Turtles.

Six out of seven species of Sea Turtles are either endangered or threatened. We can help by volunteering to clean up plastic on beaches, set specific laws protecting the turtles, and there is no consistent way to prevent oil spills, but it helps to fill the tanks to only 90 percent to reduce the risk of a spill. The number of Sea Turtles could greatly increase if we increase our efforts to resolve the issue.

Why I chose this current event.

I chose this because I have been hearing about Sea Turtles being threatened or endangered for quite a while. I have always wanted to do a little research, but I had no real motive to do so. This assignment gave me the perfect moment to do some real research. I was also curious about their place in the food chain and what would really happen if they went extinct. I wanted to show people the dangers of continuing to keep these animals at risk to help raise awareness of the issue to even potentially help make a difference.
