Since the sand in the systems cannot hold nutrients very well, they partially rely on the nests of Sea Turtles failing so that the baby turtles that got trapped can be absorbed by the soil. The nutrients the sand absorbed are used by dune plants so that they can grow. Sea Turtles also consume some sea grass beds actually increasing the productivity of the beds. Some species of Sea Turtles eat sea sponges. This helps control the population of the sponges from getting too high. Sea Turtles do not only help animals lower in the food chain, Sea Turtles also contribute to animals above itself in the food chain. If Sea Turtles went extinct, beach and dune biomes may not have enough nutrients to support vegetation, sea sponges will become overpopulated, and predators will not have as large of a variety of prey to consume. I was also curious about their place in the food chain and what would really happen if they went extinct.
