My hot take on social media influencers is that they are bad. While most influencers have good intentions on posting and advertising harmless products to gain a following/ make money from companies; many fail to realize the unrealistic expectation of their ‘picture perfect’ life they portray. This creates a number of issues for people who follow who might develop FOMO, anxiety, self- doubt, body image issues, etc. It is extremely common today many people with social media compare themselves to people they see on their screen and it is easy to feel saddened by the perfection they portray in their post.

Men and women are faced with the constant need to look like what society deems attractive or acceptable. Social Media Influencers, more often than not, thrive on the fact that they are conventionally attractive. Small waist, long hair, thigh gap, flat stomach, these are just some of the things that women are expected to have. Men on the other hand often struggle with the feeling like they have to be toned, athletic, tall, and have clear skin. Generation Z praises these societal stereotypes which are harmful not only for our generation, but for the generations after us. Constantly seeing these beautiful people on the internet can then lead to eating disorders, depression, and other mental illnesses. That example is just one of the many problems social media influencers can cause. Influencers influence it’s in the name, but unfortunately many of them do not use their platforms to inform their following/fans of important world problems. In no way are they required to, but if you are teaching a 12 year old that having long legs and clear skin will make them “beautiful” why not teach that same 12 year old about global warming? Unfortunately, more than half of influencers fans consist of children from the ages of 11-16. Imagine the damage that can be caused by teaching teenage girls and boys how they are supposed to look, how they are supposed to act, and how they are supposed to live. They are in the most confusing time of their lives, trying to determine where they belong in the world, the beauty expectations that are almost forced upon them whether it's on TikTok, Snapchat, or Instagram is incredibly harmful. In conclusion, Social Media Influencers are not evil people, but the messages that they are sending their audience is bad.

For the most part, I feel like social media influencers have an overall positive impact on society. There are many things that have to be taken into account, but influencers provide people all over the world with access to products they endorse and information/skills about things they have expertise in. This can lead to their audience spreading accurate information about things the influencer endorses. Their endorsement of products likely improves certain industries and economies as well. It is important to mention that not all influencers have a positive impact, and many contribute to issues like mental health, eating disorders, and other things that heavily impact the youth, so it really depends on the type of influencer.

Social media influencers gain their power and influence by making their life seem really fascinating or endorsing popular/ interesting items. For example, David Dobrik is a really popular social media influencer who vlogs his days and makes his life seem so fun and interesting. So it can be interesting to watch his lifestyle.

A lot of people like to follow influencers that live a lavish lifestyle that most are unlikely to achieve. I don't know why so many people are attracted to these kind of influencers (because when you think about it they don't really help the general public in any way), but they live a life people like to watch, which is generally unrealistic and unattainable. It is most likely for entertainment, but then these influencers entertain people for the wrong reasons, which then causes the issues we have today.

I think that as humans we are looking for someone to follow and to look up to. As a kid I looked up to my dad like he was a super hero and as I got older it moved to other people who were interested in the same things I was. I think this is much like social media influencers, if you follow someone they are either someone you know or someone you want to emulate especially the high profile social media influencers. I think that they have risen to the height they have because we want to follow someone and we decided on them.

No, I don't think that it is unfair. It is important to take into account that there are all different kinds of influencers (good and bad) and some don't negatively impact people's mental health but rather improve it instead. But social media influencers understand the power that their messages hold, and when they spend their time showing off everything "perfect" without showing and talking about the realities of life, they are to blame.

Social media influencers can definitely impact their followers mental health negatively. Although I wouldn't say that all social media influencers do this, and most do it unintentionally. Many people can be negatively impacted by the lives people portray, or the beauty standard that has become relevant today. But also many other influencers have become more open with their mental health and the body positivity movement which is a shift in the right direction.
