Another example: Let's say a student isn't doing his work in class, doesn't listen and doesn't do his homework, the teacher won't make him do his work by showing him love and appreciation because it won't work and the student won't be properly motivated because he wont have anything at stake and usually won't care. But if a teacher threatens the student by scaring him and saying he will give him a -4 or a detention, the student will be scared and will do what the teacher sais to not undergo consequences.
