Prompt: To what extent does Shakespeare rely on the motif of love vs. infatuation to deliver one of his main messages, and why is this important?

Introductory Paragraph

From movies to television shows, from poetry to music, one thing is for certain--love is almost always in the air. Yet, love is a concept that should not be oversimplified. No--there are several aspects to what love is and to what love is not. Throughout William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, the motif of love vs. infatuation is established to help deliver one of the central ideas that love has the power to blind anyone, especially emotional adolescents. This idea is significant because it emphasizes the point that when people allow themselves to be swept away by passion, they run the risk of ignoring all of the warning signs along the way.

Friar thinks that Romeo’s love for Juliet is infatuation and not true love because he moved on from Rosaline so fast. His love for Juliet is quick and sudden and Friar doesn’t believe it will last. He thinks Romeo is just in love with the looks of women and not who they are truly as a person, Friar doesn't want Juliet to be a quick "love" like Rosaline was. Which circles back to the main message that Romeo is swept away by passion and doesn't see that the "love" he feels for Juliet may just be infatuation.

This passage is meaningful because Juliet has a very powerful vision that she completely ignores. Juliet's tone really shows that she is afraid and scared that something will go wrong with Friar's plan, but she doesn't think too deeply about it. This quote emphasizes the idea that Juliet is completely blinded by love because all she can think about is being with Romeo, instead of looking at the warning sign that Tybalt will rise from the dead and come looking for revenge on Romeo.

This quote is important because Romeo dreams that Juliet finds him dead is completely ignored, Romeo focuses on Juliet's kiss that awakens him. Romeo doesn't even take two seconds to deeply think about the dream he just had and how it could mean something. This highlight the main message of the play because Romeo believes his love is real, but may just be an overwhelming amount of passion, leading him to make impulsive decisions and ignore important warning.

These quotes connect because they both prove that the love Romeo and Juliet feel, may be infatuation. The first quote shows Romeo ignoring how quickly he moved on from Rosaline because he is blinded by his love for Juliet. In the second quote Juliet is swept away by passion and completely ignore the vivid image that Tybalt rises from the dead and comes looking for Romeo. Both quotes highlight the impulsive decisions they make for each other, as well as the warning signs they ignore.

Every time one of them have a vision, they completely ignore it and their minds just go to how much they love each other. Shakespeare is trying to emphasize that kids don't look at warning signs and are impulsive.
