The French in Jamestown

My ancestory in the United States dates back to French aristocracy in and around the Jamestown settlement. The French maintained better relations with native tribes than other early Europian settlers. While most came to the Americas out of desperation my family arrived for the exotic luxury.

I am not many generations removed from prominent yet controversial historical figures, such as Robert Carter the third, a constituent of Thomas Jefferson who liberated over two hundred slaves, dividing his fortune amonst them in the process. A Statue of another one of my close ancestors being torn down made the news recently. My family on my father's side eventually moved from Virginia to London before returning to the States, specifically Elkin's Park.

On my Mother's side, immigration to the U.S. took place far more recently. The Netherlands has had a large Scottish population since 1500s. Many fled the Netherland's, regardless of their race or religion, when neighboring Nazi Germany invaded and started new lives in the States.

I was born and raised in the Northern Liberties, where recent gentrification has taken place. Through gradual renovation, it's gone from being an industrial wasteland, lined with abandoned factories, that it was in the eighties to the place that it is today. I grew up directly across from a pile of rusted junk. I was raised amongst the eccentic and artistic folks who my parent's kept company with and who the town was known for at the time.

I grew up in a household were we beleived that the only way to do a good job at anything is to be passionate about your work, that if you don't love what you do then you're doing the wrong thing. I was taught to work hard regardless of whether it meant I made a single penny and to never give up on my goals even if acheiving them might mean forfeiting the gaurentee of financial stability. I was raised so that I have a concious, I am incapable of ever intentionally harming an inccocent being, but without any form of organized religion. My father refused to impose any theology on me and beleived that choosing a denomination is a right of passge.

I spent about a year living with my grandmother after my father passed on and she has, "the etiquette memorized". I strongly beleive that manners are a way of life that applies to every situation, from hanging out with my buddies to being at home with family. Theres no circumstance inwhich I regard a lack there of manners as being completely acceptable.
