In this chapter it establishes how their society is not any ordinary type. It seems that in this would be a institute type of organization. Now this prediction is supported by how that their community is being restricted to many different things. Such as them having a strict policy of saying the word "Released". That families are limited to only 4 family members 2 boys and 2 girls. They say that supplies were delivered by cargo planes which could mean that they are confined to limited space, also Lily mentioned that they would visit different Sixes in their community when she was in Sixes. So this mean that there could be different confinements situated in this region. When she said she used to be in the Sixes i'm guessing that to be in certain age group that they are in. Overall this Chapter was pretty confusing it left a lot of things on a cliffhanger but was very intriguing at least in my opinion.
Characters:
-Jonas
-Lily
-Asher
-Father
-Mother
Questions:
- What does it mean to be released?
-What are the different rules in their lifestyle

This chapter explains how a family actually becomes a family. They explain that every December that they will have a ceremony for all the ages . Jonas ceremony into becoming a Twelve was coming up pretty soon. Apparently when you become a Twelve you are given a job right away Jonas was worried about what job he was going to get and if he would ever have fun/be the same again. Jona's father supported him and told him everything was going to be okay. They have also mentioned that there was rule you weren't allowed to ride bikes until your were 9 which I seem to find VERY strict, but it also explained that they would change that rule eventually . One final other strange thing they mentioned in this chapter was comfort toys which I'm guessing would be a a type of stuffed animal or toy that at a certain age you would get, Jonas family mentioned that they would get rid of Lily's comfort toy soon because she was close to turning into an Eight. Overall in this chapter it explained how families and aging works.

Since in this chapter there were many occurrences . They explain that every December that they will have a ceremony for all the ages . They would get a new baby each year. Apparently this year Jona's family volunteered to a baby (Gabriel) looks vaguely like him. The mother of the family would not be given a chance to have a baby by themselves. The birth mothers are the ones who give birth to all the babies but after 3 years they were mentioned to be laborers the rest of their life. The nurturers were mentioned in this as well who take care for the babies and presents them to the families. It seems that strange announcements were made during the day reminding all children to quote on quote "FEMALES UNDER 9 THAT HAIR RIBBONS ARE TO BE NEATLY TIED AT ALL TIMES" or that " MALE ELEVENS THAT OBJECTS ARE NOT TO BE REMOVED FROM THE RECREATION AREA, AND THAT SNACKS ARE MEANT TO BE EATEN NOT HOARDED" Jonas knew that that was directly accused towards him because he knew that he and a friend were playing around tossing an apple. What was weird when he and Asher were throwing the apple remarked as it changed midair which would be extremely weird but that was pretty interesting leading me to new conspiracy theories.

In this chapter it starts off with Jonas looking for Asher. Jonas mentioned that Asher would be volunteering but he also stated that they had the option to take time off instead of volunteering since they are almost Twelves. I'm guessing when they are young they will have to volunteer to do labor in order to help out but when converting into getting a job they would start to lessen time in volunteering. He also explained in volunteering they would get to choose what type of volunteering they would work in order to suit their interests and their interest would affect their job in the future. One example of volunteering would be caring for the Old. They explained how Roberto was released. Larissa explained how they tell tales of the accomplishments before they were released. They would walk into a mysterious room to be "Released". My speculation on what being released is to die. Instead of waiting until you die with time the government would convince the dwellers of the community into thinking being released is a good thing and then "Release" them themselves. Larissa also stated that Children were never able to join the Releasing Ceremony which further supports my speculation because they wouldn't want the kids to witness what happens to them, even though i'm guessing no one does except the ministry.
- Cited in the text that bragging was also a rule not to be broken.
-Volunteering is required to be successful in the future
-Nakedness was prohibited towards Children and Adults, but is not employed for the Newchildren or the Old

Jonas dreamed about Fiona and him wanting to bath her, so now he would have to take pills "stirrings" they called it. They would have to take the pills until they enter the house of the old. I myself find it kinda odd that one has to take supplements in for the rest of their life in order to be stable.

They cited in the chapter that Sevens, Fours, Fives, and Sixes would have to wear jackets with buttons to learn Interdependence. For almost the rest of the chapter Jonas family went to the Ceremony to celebrate Lily's and Jonas "age", also babies and Nurtures were there as well giving babies to new Families. At the end we were left at a cliffhanger after Jonas finished talking about how Match making works and him complaining about how everything was just too perfect, how he wanted change in everyday life . It ended off with everyone gathering at the doors.
Questions: What will happen when Jonas goes up?

Then Jonas is presented towards the crowd stating that he had not been assigned but selected. Selected to be the next Receiver of Memory. Apparently the Receiver cannot be monitored or modified and is to be alone apart from everyone else. Receiver is the most honored job in the community. To be a receiver Jonas will have to be able to go through an immense amount of pain. The previous receiver cited that he has the Capacity to see Beyond. Jonas struggled to figure out was going on, once again when he looked over to the crowd the "changed". Jonas was overwhelmed with many feelings of pride, gratitude, and fear.

Chapter 9 starts off with Jonas finally feeling different from all the other people in his life. He had to start training very soon. Jonas parents mentioned another Eleven getting skipped over as he did it was a girl. They are never to speak or even use the name for future newborns. They called it Not-To-Be-Spoken, they never saw her again. When they were given folders to start training everyone else got many pages and pages of work stated what they had to train for. but Jonas only got one measly paper. The paper stated that he had to go to the Annex everyday after school, after he has to go straight to his dwelling right after training hours, he is not to discuss any of his training to anyone, and is prohibited from dream telling, he does not have to take any medication with the exception of injuries and sicknesses. Jonas was disappointed that his schedule never left time to be social with his friends. Jonas has many opinions about what rules he would have to follow some are fine with him but others can be nerve racking. These rules have altered his reality of everything questioning society and everything. I'm guessing this will affect the future drastically and maybe things would be extremely different.

Jonas then walked into a room which s what seemed to be very fancy and luxurious compared to his. There he was met with the other Elder/Receiver of Memory. The Elders job was to transmit his past memories of the whole world onto Jonas. In this Chapter they have started training with Jonas. With many experiences to come Jonas may become faced with a number of interesting things in the future.

This chapter started off from the last. With Jonas top bare on the bed with the Elder placing his cold hand a top of him. Suddenly something changed Jonas felt cold and automatically transported to another place not physically but mentally. He had mentally transported to another place upright the touch of the Elder has faded and eventually disappeared. He then experiences the feeling of tobogganing. After the Elder transmitted the memory to Jonas he stated the he could not experience that again because he had "removed" the memory from himself. They had done 3 transmissions that day . The Elder then explained and transmitted what a type of pain felt like he made Jonas experience a sunburn. Jonas the said that he now can understand what they mean't by pain but the Elder look at him with sad eyes. I think the Elder looked at him that way because he wouldn't want him to feel all the horrible things of the world . Finally in this chapter the Elder explained to Jonas just to call him the Giver.

Chapter 12 starts off with Jonas lying to his parents that he had not had a dream but he did. He dreamed about sledding down that hill over and over again. Fiona had waited for Jonas that night she expected him to explain to her why he had stayed soo long but that was against the rules. Again Jonas saw the "change" in Fiona's hair as he watched her walk to her training. He asked the Giver what he had seem many times before the information that the Giver had given him was that he had seen that as well when he was young but just to make sure the Giver decided to do a test on Jonas. The Giver told Jonas to call back the memory since he could not give him the exact memory once again. Apparently Jonas had witnessed the sled "change" once again in his memory just what had happened to the apple or Fiona's hair. He stopped remembering and told the Giver what he had saw then the Giver told him to look upon the bookshelf and the row of books had also "changed". Turns out that Jonas is now able to see colour and shape the colour that he had been seeing was red Fiona's hair, the apple, and the red tones in the audiences faces. I think that the people of the community aren't able to see colour which is extremely strange. In the next chapter the Giver said he was going to show Jonas a rainbow.

Jonas is now questioning his life and everyones in this community and how this "institute" works. Jonas then attempted something very risky with his friend Asher. Jonas attempted to try and make Asher see the colours amoung the flowers. Jonas had failed and had also made Asher uncomfortable . He had also tried to make Lily see elephants but had failed and ended up hurting her. Jonas had a conversation with the Giver about why he didn't have a spouse or children but turns out there was never a rule where the Receiver couldn't have a spouse or children. The Recceiver must not share information with ny of their children or family members/spouses. He said the previous Receiver had spilled secrets throughout the public which was chaos as cited by the Giver, he also stated that she was deported (in my case) to somewhere out there.

In the accident Jonas was on sled and lost control broke his leg, scraped his face and vomits on the ground. After Jonas had asked for Relief-Of-Pain but could not because he would had to endure the pain in order to get Wisdom. Jonas then goes on to endure pain with all the past memories being transfered onto him. They talked about how there was a rule were laborers were able to have 4 babies instead of just 3 but then that rule just quickly turned to chaos and madness. Everyone was starving and warfare occured but this happened long ago. Gabriel was maturing well but at night still was very troubling. So Jonas decided for Gabriel to sleep with him in his room. Little did he know that during the night GAbriel would wake up pretty frequently so when Jonas was once patting his back he had thought about a calm lake but it then began to fade away

Jonas does not want to be the receiver anymore he complaining about how much pain he is receiving ha cannot take it anymore. The Giver reminded him of all the good memories he had been given in order to for he to release these negative thoughts Jonas ha accumilated. One of the happy memories that Jonas had received was during Christmas seeing everyone happy Jonas had felt "warmth" . he and the GIver had gone through the memory discussing grandparents, and how some things in the memory are outlawed now like the fireplace and candles. Apparently JOnas had asked a question that was extremely rude according to his society. He asked " Do you love me?". HIs parents did say yes but they were extremely offended by some weird feeling I'm guessing. Gabriel had continued to sleep in Jonas room becasue it had help gabriel sleep.

IN this chapter it starts off with saying that, that day is declared an unscheduled holiday. Jonas was very exited he had also stated that he had stopped taking the pills in the morning so the Stirrings returned. To his suprise he was not offended or mad he was just embarresed and pleasured that the Stirrings came back. The memories that had accumulated within Jonas had now stuck with him so now he can PERMANENTLY see all the colours and know everything in the past that is still here in the present. Including the feelings of other people analising how they feel. Jonas had been playing with Asher until he stared deeply into the field him remembering the boy begging for water the the pain he had felt. Jonas was feeling overwhelmed with what he had ot go through feeling that his freindships are slipping away losing everyone connected to him. Jonas father mentioned that tomorrow the twins would be born by weighing them and seeing which one weighs heavier, the heavier would stay while the lighter on would be released.

Chapter 18 starts off with Jonas asking about how the Giver feels about being released or just releasing in general. He then goes on to ask what happened "Ten years ago". The Giver then reveals that the name of the girl caught up with the incident was name Rosemary. The Giver explained that he had loved her like a granddaughter and he was hurt to see her in pain when he transferred those awful memories. Jonas had ask if he was going to be gone or die. The Giver wasn't too worried but still very caring. I think that something may happen to Jonas or The Giver very soon.

The chapter starts off with Jonas apoligizing to the Giver for wasting time about asking questions. Jonas just wanted to know what would happen to the other twin because his dad is releasing a child that day. The Giver then replied saying that he wishes that they wouldn't do that. Jonas then explained that they couldn't have two identical people running around in the community. The Giver explained that Jonas was able to watch the releasing if he just asked it wasn't against the rules for Jonas. Jonas had hesitated and thought about how his father wouldn't want his father knowing something so private. The Giver then pulled up a screen showing that they weigh the newborns and whichever on is lighter would be released. His father inserted a syringe into the newborns head, once he was finished the newborn jerked slightly then went limp. After Jonas realized that his father had killed the child. The Giver admitted that that was how Rosemary had died saying she wanted to do it on her own so he looked away. This chapter end with a great feeling with Jonas heartbroken and shocked a very sad tone was added to the story. My thoughts are that the Giver didn't look at the screen so Rosemary still could be alive that is a possible speculation in my opinion.

Jonas had ended up being really shocked knowing the truth about how they mean being released is to be killed. So the Giver notified his family that Jonas was going to be staying with him for that night. Jonas in this chapter was really starting to question his existence in this community, questioning why his dad lied to him about almost everything and why they are here. Jonas did not want to go back to that forsaken community. He was worrying about Fiona and how she was just getting into learning about releasing arts. The Giver then explained that they would have to live without feelings but Jonas would not ever again understand what it is to live like without feelings. The Giver explained how important it was to be the Receiver of Memories and that Jonas would just have to stick through it. Jonas then goes on the say that he and the Giver would go on without everyone leave them saying that they wouldn't need to care for them. Jonas the next day goes off to home acting like nothing had happened, faking everything. After some months it was the ceremony again the Giver had to transfer memories of courage and strength to Jonas it would help him find Elsewhere. Jonas had then planned to leave his dwelling at night meeting with the Giver and also leaving a note to his parents letting them know he had gone up and early to go for a ride along the river, that he would be back for the ceremony. The giver then stated that he would order a vehicle and driver from the speaker. Then after Jonas had gone on his search for elsewhere the Giver would announce to the public that Jonas had become lost in the river and they would have to start the ceremony of the lost. Jonas had begged the Giver to come but he had refused. The Giver then explained that he would want to stay here with his daughter, Jonas asked who is his daughter AND HIS DAUGHTER WAS ROSEMARY.

This Chapter starts off with the day that Jonas will leave the community. He stated that he did not feel any pain with leaving the community just that he had a deep sadness that he was leaving his closest friend behind in that fake society. Last night Jonas father said that they would release Gabriel the next morning. Of course Jonas was not happy about that. So Jonas that morning took Gabriel and himself using his fathers bike which had the baby seat attached into it in order to escape. The went off on their journey to escape. With Jonas' memories to aid them using memories of exhaustion to make Gabriel fall asleep. Also when the planes came around Jonas had known that they had heat sensing monitors so Jonas would use a cold memory to transmit to both of them in order to feel cold. They would come every now and then. Until one occasion where the planes never flew over them day or night. My thoughts are that the planes may have a limit on where to scout in an area. Jonas may have gone extremely far from the perimeter of the communities and that's why the planes are not flying over them anymore.

Jonas is beginning to face harder terrain it was mentioned that one night when Jonas was biking that he had fallen and Gabriel was unharmed but Jonas on the other hand had a sprained ankle and cuts all over him. One day when Gabriel called out to a plane Jonas had looked up and realized it wasn't a plane at all it was a bird. Jonas had remembered from a memory that was transmitted to him. Continuing on his journey Jonas had started to see more animals and creatures. Jonas was running out of food to provide for the both of them. Jonas was getting weaker and weaker everyday he remembered the community and food that was provided but he was still in pain. This chapter had ended off with Jonas being extremely exhausted. His behavior could lead to him bring in a poor condition.

Jonas was determined to get to Elsewhere. They both now were getting weaker and weaker. One positive thing that happened was they were able to experience snow. Jonas could no longer take the bike as transportation for it would no longer work. Jonas tried to bring back one last memory of warmness to comfort him and Gabriel. He had pushed himself too hard he had collapsed with Gabriel squirming around in the cold snow. Jonas and Gabriel had arrived at the top of the hill Jonas stated that he was going to lose conciousness soon. The ending was a bit confusing him seeing lights and feeling warmth right after he said he was going to lose conciousness. My thoughts are that Jonas was hallucinating and he and Gabriel never really did make it to Elsewhere there was probably no elsewhere and that is my they had built that institute in order to keep everyone "safe" from the dangerous things out in the wild.
