The type of learning that is most helpful to me in a credential program is being exposed to different ways of thinking and different ways to present material to students. This allows me to begin seeing new ways that I could begin presenting the information to my own students, since I want to consistently improve my own instruction. Improving my instruction, in my opinion, becomes expedited when I see the way others teach.

The quote that stands out most to me is "All phases of initial teacher preparation should be sustained by, and fully directed at, the need to awaken the teacher candidate to the realization that what truly matters is 'how mind answers to mind'". This quote stands out to me since it emphasizes how important it is for teacher candidates must be qualified for the job since the students' learning and thought processes will answer to the teachers' methods of presentation and lecture.

Dewey's goal in education is to ensure that the students are able to learn through experience. One means to get to this goal is ensuring that the teachers that teach the students are highly educated in their curriculum so that the teacher will be able to identify what methods and modalities of instruction will resonate most with the students. This also ensures that the students are able to receive education and lessons that enable them to build upon their own knowledge and experience while finding how the material is interconnected, rather than the material having a disconnect.

The type of learning that is most helpful to me is hands-on activities and working with students directly. I feel that I gain the most knowledge about teaching when I am in the classroom. Whether I am observing another teacher or teaching myself, being in the classroom offers me the most experience.

Dewey's goal on education is that teacher education should prepare educators to understand subject-matter and to work in the classroom. Teacher education should be intensive and continuous. This is necessary for teachers to achieve the ultimate goal of holistically educating a student, giving them the ability to become a life-long learner. Learning is a life-long process meant to create growth, which is a result of experience.

Considering that this is my first credential course, I feel as though I cannot answer this question yet. In my undergrad I've noticed that guidance and examples are the most important. But when the foundations are there, allowing students (like me!) to discover things themselves leads to much richer understanding.

The quote from Dewey that stands out most to me is quite a long one, but I really identify with it! "Hence it is impossible to prepare the child for any precise set of conditions. To prepare him for the future life means to give him command of himself; it means so to train him that he will have the full and ready use of all his capacities" (Dewey, pg. 2).

From my reading, I see Dewey's goal as preparing children for social life, as that is far more important than any particular subject matter in his opinion.

The learning that has been most helpful to me in the credential program is the discussions that help us connect readings to personal experiences to that of others and so on. I believe it is very important to see yourself, strengths and struggles, reflected in a reading in order to understand how it can be applied to you and your classroom. This is also beneficial, because I can learn and develop new ideas and concepts that will benefit my teaching regardless of my subject or student demographics.

This is my first course within the credential program but I have taken various education/teaching-related classes at Fresno state. Something I did like is having in-class discussions because I get to see what my classmate's thoughts are on certain topics. This helps me see things from different perspectives in which i could reflect and maybe expand of my learning or even catch something I missed.

The goal Dewey had for education was to make it relevant to the present time so it can be beneficial for the student. He wants to challenge the traditional way of teaching because it is structured and narrow which could not prepare new teachers for diverse classrooms.

The most helpful type of learning to me in the credential program is hands on learning. I realize that my experiences and connections to people and ideas are where I find the most growth within myself.

Dewey's goal on education is for the teacher to help the student understand and unfold their experience's. He believed that the teacher was the vessel that supplied the conditions that promoted growth within the student.

I learn best when we are hands on in class. It helps me understand concepts better to make sure I know what I am doing and I retain information better when I do things physically.

One quote that stood out to me was “ the enterprise of supplying the conditions which insure growth”. The way I interpreted this quote was by how if we or students are supplied with the right equipment, we are able to succeed and reach a goal that we could with the right tools.

Dewey’s goal on education is for teachers to get out of the habit of teaching old techniques. The goal would be to connect world's application towards school. To branch out and be opened minded.

A type of learning that is most helpful to me in the credential program would be an open discussion and listening to others point of view as well as doing activities that cover about the topic of the day to help me have a more understanding of the topic. 

A quote that stands out the most to me is “On the one hand, they need to figure out how to teach subject-matter to students; on the other hand, they need to figure out how to manage a classroom.” This stands out to me because I believe this is what teachers need to obtain and be able to implement to the classroom and to the students so that it assists the student's knowledge and skills and lead them to be  successful in their education.  

I believe Dewey’s goal is to let educators understand that they need to have a good class structure and management as well as the providing the correct tools and materials into the students' curriculum development as a way to help improve their skills and knowledge.

I have always learned best kinesthetically and visually. I learn best by doing. Actually being in the classroom with the students has been the best learning experience I have received in the credential program. When I was in middle school and high school I figured out that if I "taught" my pretend class the material that I was studying I did much better on the test. I have learned during my time as a student teacher than I have learned in the classroom at FPU.

"On the other hand, actual practice teaching before students, in classrooms, is an important part of what Dewey envisioned for the education of teachers." This quote immediately stuck out to me. I remember what it was like at the beginning of my student teaching; it was a disaster. I was incredibly awkward and subdued in the classroom. That has changed completely. I now feel comfortable enough to run my own classroom. I think it is important that teachers have some form of experience before they are made to be on their own.

Dewey wants teachers to stay away from the habits that have plagued the world of education. He wanted teachers to expand their thinking in order to get their students to think in a different way. Teachers should deeply understand the material and subject that they are teaching. Teachers should continue to build on their own education throughout their career.

The type of learning that has helped me in my credential program has been in-person classes. I'm pretty much a visual student, and when I can be in a classroom setting, it helps me better understand the lesson. Also, working with partners or groups has been a plus in learning.

What type of learning is most helpful to me?

When I learn, I need to be repetitive and active, and being engaged/hands-on helps me to understand more than words with which I'm just reading page to page. I enjoy open discussions and hearing different people's ideas and perspectives to different readings, because experiences and backgrounds can change how information is perceived - and I love hearing how others see the world and our writings.

As Dewey stated, “it thus becomes the office of the educator to select those things within the range of existing experience that have the promise and potentiality of presenting new problems” – new problems that can lead the learner to new ways of looking, new ways of thinking, and new ways of acting (1938/ Dewey 1997b, p. 75)." (Page 2) It is up to teachers and educators to help our future generation with new problems, as most students have not yet had many life experiences yet to know or come up with certain problems or situations to think about early on in life. We are here to educate, and guide.

What is Dewey's goal on Education?

Dewey believed that teachers and students are all equal, and those with lesser knowledge should not be looked down upon, but, with hands outreached, guided and assisted to grow along side us, as we all are always learning together.
