Shaun and Liz are talking whilst Ed is seen in the background swearing. She is trying to connect with him but it's clear they have no privacy and they repeat " yeah its not that we don't like you Ed" which shows already that Ed is indirectly involved in their relationship, almost as a symbol of the fact that everything has to be repeated to Shaun because he doesn't get how to properly cooperate with Liz in a relationship. Also that Shaun's world revolves more around his mates and the pub than his girlfriend, and sitting in the pub to discuss their issues demonstrates how disorderly his priorities are. The positioning of the characters a few frames on also shows Dianne and David in the middle, they are yet another obstacle standing between them.

The location of the opening sequence is in a traditional parochial pub. We see this in the bar's counter and glasses in shallow focus, setting the tone and nationality of the film. The opening shot is of Shaun looking at the camera, which is a demonstration of breaking the 4th wall and is an element of postmodernity. He is smoking as well as drinking which sets the time period for the entire film. When considering the time period and place, we could expect to see British values, ideologies and identities represented in the rest of the narrative

within opening sequence we see liz and Shaun and how each character is within the relationship. Liz is the active role within the relationship because she actively seeks to alter the relationship to make it more exiting and so they can exclusively spend time together. Shaun is the passive role because he is quite happy to do the same thing over and over. this changes dramatically throughout the film because Shaun becomes the active one by trying to rekindle there relationship and leading the group of them into safety

Whilst Shaun and Liz are discussing the state of their relationship, the frame solely focuses on them however a whip pan is then used to show either one on each side of the table with Ed placed in the middle playing a game. This can reference to the fact that during their entire relationship, Ed is always in between the two; getting in the way which is also highlighted through the use of Ed's dialogue, constantly interrupting their conversation by swearing in between each their sentences. We can infer that although Shaun and Ed are supposedly best friends, Ed shows no remorse about how his actions may be interfering in Shaun's relationship thus only caring about himself and what he wants to do. Regardless, because of their friendship, Shaun is also reluctant to stop hanging out with him despite Liz's request for more privacy, defending the situation by revealing that Ed doesn't have many friends therefore showing that he cares more for him than Liz.

Shaun is dressed in his work clothes. It appears that he has traveled from his work place and gone straight to the pub to perhaps drink away his stress. He wears the same clothes in a vast proportion of the film apart from the morning scene and alternations to his work uniform, which emphasizes the mundane routine that people go through. His dress code also conveys his social class being working class, which juxtaposes with David and Dianne's dress codes as signifying them as middle class. They are not in their work uniforms like Shaun is, them and Liz all seem like they have made an effort. More of an effort than Shaun and Ed. This sets up a binary opposition between the characters from the beginning of the film, as Shaun of the Dead follows a lot of Shaun and Ed VS Liz and her friends as a narrative structure

the dong Ghost town was made in the early 80's. the music video depicts scenes of a empty London which is similar to later in the film when the characters try to navigate there way to the Winchester (minus the zombies) The song lyrics warn the audience of urban decay, unemployment and violence. which are all aspects we see in the film ed is unemployed and Shaun doesn't have the greatest job we see this when he finds out he is doing the same job as a 17 year old, we see constant violence through out like when the characters fight off zombies and urban decay is an inevitable if the whole world is over run with zombies. Also during the time the song was released young people were under a lot of scrutiny for being "aimless" and "vacant". this is relevant because the characters would have been teenagers in the 80's and now they will have grown up with all these characteristics. we also see a large group of hooded teenagers walking as if they were already zombies
