Mayflower Discussion Question 1: What beliefs and character traits that typified the Pilgrims enabled them to survive in the hostile environment that greeted them in the New World? Did some of the same traits that helped them survive limit them in other ways? How so? by Jason Brater

The things that helped the Pilgrims survive were the fact that they could build houses and a huge wall made of wood. They also made alliances with Indians. Even though they knew how to build houses and different structures, they did not have all of the materials that they needed to build sturdy and durable ones like the ones made in England. Since they were new to the country and did not have many people in their group, they needed protection from the near by Indians. They were successful in making an alliance with them, but they were very dependent on that alliance, so it gave the Indians the upper hand. This could have back fired at any time.

They believed in working together in to make the colony succeed, the previous settlers did not have a plan in the works on how their settlements were to work. The Pilgrims also believed that they were protected by divine power and that they would not fail to please god. They had experience in adapting to a new life while in Holland. This did give them some kind of an advantage.

They came to the new country with mostly the same objectives, so it helped them with working together. They were also new to the country, so they needed protection or alliances with the near by Indians. They had no other way to survive unless the were allies at least one of the Indians, so it made them very dependent on them. This caused them to lose the upper hand. Their alliance with the Adventurers gave them some support and backing, but once that fell through it just added more problems to their list.

The Pilgrims believed in working together to help make their new colony a success. This shows right before they step off of the boat when the constructed the Mayflower Compact, to make sure everyone had a voice and no one would go unheard. One of their main reasons for doing this is because they had just left England because of a king thy viewed as a tyrant who made all of their decisions for them. Their determination to work together helped them overcome what seemed impossible when they arrived, building a successful settlement from the ground up. Whether they were building houses or growing crops they would always do it together, no matter what. However, when they worked together it slowed them down, especially when at war with the King Philip and his army of natives. It would take them weeks even months to come up with a feasible decision on how to fight the natives. Where as the natives had King Philip to make their decisions for them. This gave the natives a sizable advantage in times of war. The trait of working together gave them many benefits to survive in the hostile environment they had just entered, but it had also slowed them down when it mattered most. A second trait is their belief in god. They put so much faith into someone that most had never seen or met. There is no doubt that it helped them get through the winter while they believed that everything happened for a reason and as long as they held belief they would survive. This belief helped them persevere through the worst of times and enjoy the best of them. The belief in god also hindered them. While at war they held the same beliefs that everything happened for a reason that if god wanted them to win they would win. Sometimes they had no faith in themselves to win the battles and only put their faith in god to win the battles for them.

1. Some beliefs that the pilgrims had both aided and hindered them in the new world. One of the traits that helped them the most was their faith in a higher power IE God in this case. This shows it really helped them survive when the other "godless" Settlements to the east and west struggled in being as unified as the pilgrims were at the time. While other settlements were in constant peril of being raided and killed by Indians the pilgrims forged alliances and kept strong because of their faith. But this strength was also one of their greatest weaknesses because of their hesitance to bring in new members their population was much smaller compared to other settlements at the time and this hindered their ability to trade and gather because of their lack of size they never grew to a Large
colony like Boston, Rhode Island, New York. This helped the pilgrims stand out in a bare desolate but in a way plentiful region of New England.

Character traits that enabled the Pilgrims to survive was that they were loyal to their and helped the people around them. Whatever they did gravitated towards their bible and if it's not in the bible, you can't do it. This limited them because they were to trusting. This led to the first captain they employed sabotaging their first ship Speedwell and causing it to be to dangerous for them to take out to see, but this however still helped them out when they got of the ship because they made the Mayflower Compact which is like the foundation before they started to build the colonies. Their faith was the force that led them on.

Back in England, the Separatists were persecuted for worshiping outside of the Anglican Church. Their hardships gave them the motivation to move to the New World. They were determined to create a new life for themselves and other Separatists. The Pilgrims formed a strong bond that gave them the strength to survive in New England. The Separatists also believed in predestination, the idea that God chose if an individual would be saved or not before he created the Earth. The pilgrims wanted to work hard so that they could receive a sign from god that told them they were one of the elect. This gave them more motivation to survive.. These traits were helpful, yet bad in other ways. It was a factor to bringing them to tense relations with the Indians. They did not want non-Puritans in their community. There were efforts to convert the Indians to Puritanism but most of them resisted. There were also some problems with the Strangers in the very beginning of the trip to the New World but they were mostly solved with the Mayflower Compact.
