The Philippines' pre-colonial era was characterized by a diverse, and active society with a strong heritage of culture. Indolence stereotypes were historically applied to justify colonization and exploitation; as such, they should be viewed in the context of colonial propaganda rather than as an accurate representation of the Filipino people at the time.

"A man in the Philippines is only an individual, he is not a member of a nation." - Jose Rizal

This line was written by Rizal in an effort to explain why the Filipino people never thrived during the Spanish colonization. Rizal argued that Filipinos were not naturally indolent; rather, their laziness was caused by the way the Spaniards (and, regrettably, certain Filipino elites) treated the natives. Rizal's declaration that Spain preferred that the Filipinos stay uneducated over being informed, in my opinion, was devastating. Rizal had always been appreciative of his motherland, but he was unable to ignore the atrocities and mistreatment the Spanish had inflicted on the Philippines.

GALLEON TRADE & ECONOMIC INDEPENDENCE (CIRCA 1500s -1800s)

The presence of the Spaniards significantly altered the Philippines' location in relation to Asia and made the islands one of the key hubs of the global economy fostered by the galleon trade. They established the groundwork for future developments: foreign merchants arrived in Manila; local traders could travel to other Asian ports; the trade in exports of indigenous goods was stimulated; and local textile manufacturers were promoted. Revolutionary changes did not occur in the eighteenth century because Philippine commerce was still a transshipping process.

The idea that Filipinos are lazy was strongly rejected by many people, including revolutionary leaders like Andrés Bonifacio and Emilio Aguinaldo. They argued for Philippine independence and self-determination as they recognized the injustice of colonial rule and worked to dispel these unfavorable stereotypes.

The Philippine Revolution, which got under way in 1896, was a blatant example of the Filipino people's determination to fight for their independence and their capacity to unite together and carry out an extended armed struggle against Spanish colonial rule. The Filipinos' desire for self-governance and the destruction of repressive colonial structures were expressed in the revolution. Moreoever, Spanish colonial rule came to an end when Filipino revolutionary leaders declared the Philippines independent on June 12, 1898. Although the nation's independence was only temporary because it was quickly placed under American control, this time marked a crucial turning point in Philippine history.

The Americans described the Filipinos as uncivilized as the indigenous people were known to be illiterate and barbarians. During the American colonial era, colonizers opened schools and a new government was established to promote the welfare of the Filipinos, which aimed to equip Filipinos with the skills and knowledge needed to participate in more varied economic activities. Moreover, while a stereotype of Filipino laziness was spread by some, many Filipinos opposed it and worked to dispel these unfavorable stereotypes. During this time, there were significant developments in Filipino nationalism and the desire for self-rule, which eventually fueled the movement for independence.

The difficulties faced amid foreign occupation, the battle for survival, and defiance to the Japanese forces were the main topics during this time. On the contrary, the Filipino people showed their resilience and determination in the face of difficulty, and many engaged in the struggles for independence and contributed to the ultimate liberation of the Philippines. The Japanese occupation authorities implemented a number of economic regulations during this time, including forced labor programs and fiat currency issued by the Japanese government. Filipinos experienced severe economic exploitation, which caused great suffering and extreme poverty.

Politics, the media, and the economy were just a few of the societal spheres in which his government exercised influence.
