It sets the tone of the chapter and expresses her faith and religion. By beginning this way, Satrapi also highlights the innocence and certainty of childhood beliefs, which later become more complicated. She is standing alone with a blank background which emphasizes her point and makes her become the center of attention to the readers.

The girls have different expressions such as one smiling, one frowning and another peeking from a wall, which make it clear that not all children reacted the same way. Satrapi draws this to show how the government imposed rules on people who each felt differently, showing that personal freedom and individuality were being restricted. By affecting children at school, she emphasizes how quickly politics interfered with even simple parts of life.

Class divisions

The global issue that appears in this panel is class divisions. Satrapi uses Marji’s discomfort in her father’s car to highlight how wealth separates people in Iranian society and how these differences begin to shape Marji’s understanding of herself. The quote, “I finally understood why I felt ashamed to sit in my father’s Cadillac,” directly shows Marji’s realization of the privilege she holds. Satrapi draws Marji sitting, looking small and closed off on the left side, her expression being sad, while her father confidently drives on the right. This layout emphasizes the gap between them, even though they are sitting side by side since to Marji, the Cadillac is not just a car but a symbol of the social inequality she has now become aware of. She feels the weight of belonging to a wealthy class in a society where many people have much less. Satrapi demonstrates this by drawing Marji in the car but looking like she doesn’t belong there. Marji’s facial expression is important since she looks uncomfortable, with her head lowered and her hands together. This body language contrasts with her father’s upright, normal posture, suggesting how they see the situation differently. To her father, the Cadillac showed success and comfort., while for Marji it becomes a source of shame. Satrapi uses this difference to show how Marji’s awareness of inequality is growing. She is beginning to question the privileges her family has, recognizing that she is apart from others in ways she cannot ignore. This marks a significant part of her development because she changes from enjoying comfort without questioning it to feeling conflicted about it. By Chapter 10, moments like this make Marji think more about where she belongs in society. She realizes that class divisions are not just about money but also about how people are seen and treated. This panel shows her starting to feel both responsibility and guilt, feelings that will shape how she thinks about fairness later on.

The global issue that comes up in this panel is social inequality. Satrapi shows how class differences in Iran affect not only people’s opportunities but also their personal relationships, even within the same household. The caption that says, “We were not in the same social class but at least we were in the same bed,” displays both the of closeness and separation between Marji and Mehri. Them lying side by side under one blanket shows comfort and care, but the quote still remind us that society still divides them. This moment is important because it shows Marji starting to see inequality not as a distant idea but as something that directly impacts someone she loves. Satrapi drawing Mehri crying makes this even clearer since it shows the pain of being denied love because of her background. Mehri is not judged for her personality or character but for her social class, which is something she has no control over. Marji, on the other hand, is shown reaching out to her and hugging her. This not only shows Marji’s compassion, but also her innocence since she can feel the unfairness but does not yet fully understand the larger problem behind it. By showing both of their expressions, Satrapi makes us see how Marji is beginning to notice injustice in a personal and emotional way. By Chapter 10, moments like this help Marji grow out of her childhood innocence and realize what's happening around her. She begins to realize that inequality is not just about politics or ideas, but that it is also something that shapes daily life and hurts people she cares about. This panel shows an early start in her awareness of the unfairness in the world and how it will shape her identity as she grows older.

Satrapi highlights how Marji turns to her faith and imagination to deal with the fear and confusion she feels after the revolution. Satrapi says, “I didn’t know what justice was… I abandoned the dialectic materialism of my comic strips. The only place I felt safe was in the arms of my friend.” Marji abandons her ideas of politics because they did not bring justice or peace. Satrapi draws Marji being held by God who appears as a large figure comforting and protecting her. Marji treats him as an old friend and someone who can console her. This is also prevalent earlier in the story. Marji often speaks to God at night and shares her dreams and worries with him treating him like a close friend. Her relationship with God highlights how faith is an important part of her childhood, not in the strict religious sense but as a personal source of emotional support.
