This week was by far my favorite. We had an amazing slam poetry event, actually the first one I've ever been in. We all shared powerful poems (poetry always has that thing that makes it powerful) that somehow allowed me to get to know my partners better.
A fun fact is that I felt unable to write a poem, it seemed impossible. But these classes with Chelsea encouraged me to do it, so I sat down with pen and paper and wrote the poem you can read right below.
*Of course this one isn't on paper but it's the same ;)

In this class we analyzed American indigenous songs and poems. And we listened and analyzed a song by Lido Pimienta. All this using a strategy of asking questions; some "thick" and some "thin".
It was great that through the analyzed poems I had a better understanding of the traditions and points of view of the American indigenous communities. For the task, in a nutshell, we had to choose one of the poems and read it.

This week we got to know better an incredible woman: Maya Angelou. We read Caged Bird by her. Then, I found myself wanting to know more about her and I truly feel that this woman has become a great inspiration and has filled me with warmth and hope with her wise words and her life story.
On the other hand, Chelsea introduced us to the vowel color chart. And I'm so grateful because the vowel sounds in English are a pain in the neck for me, but with this strategy I'm getting better at it :)

Week seven was about folktales and fables, so we read a native Alaskan fable from Dena'ina people.
We also learned how to use the sketchnote strategy and based on it we had to choose a folktale from our culture and illustrate it with the learned strategy. In my case I chose a legend that I particularly like and has deep meaning for Colombians.

This time we had to make a tik tok video. As I'm not good at dancing I decided to do something that I'm better at than dancing and that's cooking. In the video I show you how I prepare a typical Colombian dish: Changua (a bit controversial for Colombians🤫).
I enjoyed recording the video and especially looking into the history of the dish, trying to imagine myself in those ancient times having a Changua for breakfast. It blew my mind to know that this dish is a legacy of the Muisca indigenous people and we still eat it! And of course, eating what I cooked was also my favorite part.

This week brought with it a beautiful story that does something I love: break down biases. Hair Love, makes a twist on father-child relationships and the role of fathers in the family. Not only that, but we can also find black representation in this story. Double great.
I had already seen the Oscar winning animated short film "Hair Love" and loved it. In class I found out there was a book, we read it and I loved this story even more.

This week we look at very important topics: Self-esteem and self-love. For this, we read the book Sulwe with a gorgeous message as inspiration to create a comic strip.

I have to say that in this class I had one of the most incredible and rewarding discussions, in which I reflected a lot about the position of women in our society (because, btw, women's day was a week before) and with my classmates we talked on the ways to break the biases around women.

It was a great beginning of the course. Both teacher and classmates got to know each other better through an activity based on identity. In groups (and then in class) we discussed and shared thoughts related to what makes us who we are. Then we had to put all those thoughts into a mini book.
The most enjoyable moment for me was watching the videos of my classmates' mini-books. I could see really kind and powerful human beings, proud of who they are and their roots, and that filled me with joy.

ANSWERS!!
1.Sulwe is a children's book that talks about colorism, self-esteem and learning that true beauty comes from within. ... It is also a guide for those who do not know what colorism is and know how to approach the subject with empathy.
2. It is interesting since Sulwe, despite everything that people told him, kept moving forward, he followed the advice of his mother that will always be the most important and lets himself be carried away by his great imagination.
