Chapter 1: Release

In the Giver, Jonas lives in a utopia where people can get released. This means that you must leave and cannot come back to the utopia. Sometimes release can be positive, and for a good reason, but sometimes it can be bad, not a bad reason. It can be good if someone is released at the beginning or end or a life. This is positive because it celebrates new beginnings or celebrating a full lived life. It can be negative when it is in the middle of the life as a punishment. It could be if someone has done something very wrong or had three transgressions.

Chapter 3: Apple

An apple represents the sweet moments in life and the bad moments in life. The sweet, fruit part that we eat represents the sweet and good parts in life. The core of the apple and the seeds of the apple represent the bad moments in life, which you try to avoid and throw away, or like how the utopia released the bad criminals. You don't eat the core and seeds of an apple, and you don't keep the bad criminals in a perfect society. The seeds of an apple also represent the growth and new life. This represents new life because the seeds of an apple grow new apples, and the seeds of those apples grow even more apples. The seeds represent the cycle of life.

The Sneetches are the exact opposite of the utopia in the Giver. The Sneetches is all about your physical appearance and if you have a star or not, something you were born with, and not what you do and something that you can change but in the Giver, everything is about what you do and say, not what you look like or something that you couldn't change, like light eyes.

Jonas' utopia acquires perfection by eliminating certain things. One thing that happens in chapter 5 is that Jonas had his first Stirrings. Now, Jonas has to take pills everyday until he gets into the House of the Old. His parents take them too, and so does some of his classmates. They takes pills to eliminate possibly bad decisions or behavior, and regulate things.

The receiver's house is very different from other houses in the community. First, the receiver has locked doors, and a speaker that he can turn off with his voice. This is so he can concentrate when he is working. He cannot be disturbed by anyone. He also has bookshelves full of books. This is to symbolize wisdom.

The process in which Jonas received memories is unusual. Jonas lies down face down on a bed while the giver transmits the memory. Then, Jonas enters another realm when the memory is. He is able to see, feel, and hear the memory. The first memory Jonas received was sledding downhill in the snow.

Jonas didn't think there was a world apart from his utopia. He doesn't know about history and that there was a world before them. Jonas thought they were the only ones ever. This is not a good way to live because people need to help each other in not only their community, but the entire world. They also do not know about their history and they are uneducated in that topic.

The utopia now has climate control and they have gotten rid of weather. There is no sun or snow anymore. In the Snow memory, he learns there are no more sleds, hills, or snow flakes. In the Sunlight and Sunburn memories, he learns that there is no more sun and what the sun does.

This title could also symbolize that Jonas will become the Giver and pass on the memories to the other new Receiver.
