This was the beginning of the paranoia caused by the belief of espionage as they were assigned to track down those who wanted to infiltrate the US for foreign purposes. They would constantly accuse multiple people with little to no evidence and it would often alter their lives completely due to a false accusation.

1947 Truman Doctrine was Signed

It was the first big step that the US took towards stopping the spread of communism. It showed the world that we would be willing to do anything to stop the spread of communism.

1953 The Korean DMZ was Established

This kept both north and south korea happy as this basically signified their ability to agree to disagree as they went their separate ways and the bloodshed ended. It was a way so they could both be kept happy with their separate ideas and keep them at peace.

1953 Armistice was Signed ending the Korean War

This was a point within the cold war where it was finally somewhat peaceful. This ended the multiple year long dispute between north and south Korea and stopped so much bloodshed.

1953 The Rosenbergs were Executed

This created outrage within the US as the Rosenbergs were executed with little evidence and for something that would not usually be capable of the death penalty. American citizens were finally looking inwards and partially realizing the paranoia that ensued with the red scare.

1954 Joseph McCarthy was Censured

It was showing that the US was finally realizing the sheer idiocracy behind these accusations of communist espionage. They were finally taking action and censuring the man who was mainly behind the irrational fear of espionage.

1956 Eisenhower Doctrine Signed

It made the soviets aware that the middle east was under our protection and that we were willing to take up arms for them because of all the resources they provided.

1960 Francis powers shot down in U-2 plane

This heightened the tensions between the US and Soviets as all trust had been lost between Eisenhower and Khrushchev resulting in the nuclear disarmament agreement falling out. This all escalated the cold war and arms race severely.

1961 The Berlin wall was Created

This wall was a symbol of division between communism and capitalism therefore heightening tensions between the US and the Soviets. It was meant to stop people from looking for freedom within capitalism and was put up so fast that many families were separated and if they tried to cross they would be killed.

This put the US in a constant state of fear as this was the biggest nuclear weapon to date, and the US knew if they went into a nuclear war they would surely lose. This made the concept of deterrence much harder as they know if the Soviets fire first they will wipe out much more than anything we can throw at them.
