         <description><![CDATA[<div>General observations: lichens are not as easy to find in the human-made structures around the house. Lichens&nbsp; are found mostly found on large/old tree trunks or tree branches like maple, hemlock. Older rocks did appear to have larger lichen and more diversity.<br><strong>A:</strong> Foliose lichen (max. length 8.5 cm)&nbsp; bright green with dark hairs growing on hemlock tree branch<br><strong>B:</strong> Squamulose? lichen (max. length 1.5 cm) in tree trunk (opposite side dominated by )<br><strong>C </strong>&amp; <strong>E</strong>: Yard pebbles with very tiny light green lichen growth (max. length 0.3- 0.9 cm)<br><strong>D</strong>: Light green semi-circular squamulose? lichen growth&nbsp; in older-looking yard rock (max. length 1.8 cm)<br><strong>F</strong>: Maple tree branch with circular white smooth (4 cm) lichen</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Buildings with paint and what appears to be stripped bricks showed no life of our slowly creeping friends.<br><br>At first I felt unfortunate as to find no sign of lichen on the elderly eastern facing store fronts. I was sure they would exist and that my hypothesis that diameter of lichen I find will directly be related to age of the building. "AHA" I thought, that makes so much sense!, but I could never test this or have proof to support it.<br><br>I found that this lack of proof of my hypothesis created many more questions that turned my unfortunate feeling of humility, to an exciting adventure making me late to my meeting.&nbsp;<br><br>Can lichens not grow on painted surfaces? Does the ideology of having a nice curbside appeal lead to the destruction of these symbiotes? (Unbeknownst to the owners that the lichens themselves could be beneficial to their environment). Are the buildings too young? How fast do lichen grow?<br><br>Apparently lichen on fireplaces was a popular home fashion craze? Limestone fireplace?<br><br></div>]]></description>
