https://padlet.com/dcengirela/pb48wab851py We have a twisted relationship with plastic. It’s a cheap and miraculous product that has undoubtedly improved our standard of living. But the same qualities that make it durable also make it slow to biodegrade. Large amounts of it end up in landfills, roadside ditches, or the world's oceans. A recent discovery shows the world has now two ocean garbage patches. These are huge areas of the ocean which have a huge floating island of trash and litter. The first garbage patch was discovered in the Pacific by ocean researcher Charles Moore in 1997. The new one was found in the Atlantic by a husband and wife team Anna Cummins and Marcus Eriksen. This area of the ocean is filled with something besides plankton and fishes: trash, millions of pounds of it, most of it plastic; this makes it the largest landfill in the world, and it floats in the middle of the ocean. This unit deals with the importance of being aware about this global environmental issue and its impact at local and regional levels. It also emphasizes the searching for possible homemade alternatives that might somehow help to diminish the problem at a domestic and local level. The unit is framed on the global context Globalization and sustainability; this allows us to evaluate the relationships and the consequences of plastic over-production, its poor management and its impact on society and the environment. The topics include the concepts of matter, physical and chemical properties of matter, atoms, molecules, natural and artificial polymers, and density.
