When refusing, there are things one should and should not do. One should:"Say no assertively, stay alcohol free, suggest something else to do, stand up for others, [and] walk away from the situation" (6). One should not: "Attend a party unprepared to resist alcohol, be afraid to say no, mumble, say no too aggressively, [and] act like a know-it-all" (6).

To make negotiating easier, it is recommended that one follows a specific process. First, one has to prepare (8). Beforehand, the parties should decide on a time and place to meet and discuss. Second, one should discuss (8). In this stage, each party shares how they see the issue. Next, it is important to clarify the goals (8). Everyone's goals, issues, and viewpoints should be clear before moving on to negotiating towards a win-win outcome (9). This is usually the best result, as both parties feel as if they have gained something from the situation. Finally, the parties have to come to an agreement (9), which can come to be one all viewpoints and interests are understood and considered.
