The central focus for comprehending will be determining a character's challenges and major events in a literary text and describing the character's responses to major events and challenges in Literary Texts using key ideas and details. Furthermore, describing the connections among ideas, concepts, or series of events in informational texts using textual evidence is another central focus. The essential literacy strategy will be locating and recognizing how the characters respond to challenges in a literary text and recognize the connections among informational texts' ideas or events. The students will locate and recognize the character's response to challenges in the literary text "The Name Jar" by Yangsook Choi. Students can connect to the book "The Name Jar" by Yangsook Choi to their cultural, unique names. Students will identify the character traits and feelings and how they respond to events or challenges. This lesson's social-emotional aspect can allow students to respect and value where others come from in society and embrace individuality. The students will recognize the connections among ideas or events using the book "Rosa Parks" by Emma E. Haldy.
