I didn't know that Russia and Finland fought during this time, nor that it made Finland and Nazi Germany somewhat allies, later impacting Finland as they were not invited to be a part of NATO. --Anna York

Map #24 shares the number of deaths by the major powers-the USA, Canada, UK, France, Germany, USSR, China, Japan, Australia.

Some questions that I had after looking at the map:
1. When talking about the number of deaths, usually we in the US don't really think about the USSR as one of our allies. Why don't we acknowlege their deaths as a part of the death toll on the allied side?
2. How does the number of deaths on the Allied vs. Axis side compare to who won or lost?
3. Why were those countries listed? Australia and Canada were part of the UK at that time, and could have easliy been a part of that number. Why were casualties of other colonial areas (like in Africa, Asia) not counted?
4. What would this map had looked like if counting civilian deaths?--Anna York

Map #34 shares percentages of the Jewish population that were killed in different countries/regions of Europe during the war. Since part of my family is Jewish and several of my relatives were killed during the holocaust, I immediately looked at the areas where my family was from--Lithuania and Poland. This was an area with the highest percentage of deaths--80-90%. I know that this was represented by the family that I lost over there. Of the family that I know about, most of them died. There were several who were taken to concentration camps and several who were killed before that.

A bright spot in the map was the mention of Denmark where people were helping to hide Jews and/or help them get to safety.--Anna York

I think map 33, the map of damage done to Hiroshima by the atomic bomb, demonstrates the Japanese and US relations well. The US knew that Japan wasn't going to give up if they bombed a military base so they bombed a civilian city causing much more casualties. While it was tragic, it may have been a necessary evil because if Japan had not surrendered hundreds of thousands more could have died.
