How do we feel about this idea from 1959? Is Hansberry's message still valid?
I believe this message is still valid even 64 years later. People losing hope and not achieving dreams is a timeless thing. When Walter says, " I'm thirty-five years old; I been married eleven years and I got a boy who sleeps in the living room- and all I've got to give him is stories about how rich white people live..." shows that he is only 35 which is pretty early in his life still and he has already given up. However he is a little different that Big Walter and Mama because he is trying to reignite his dream but there is another road block, poverty. It is very hard to achieve your dreams with no money and especially hard for a person of color on top of have very little money. Even today poverty is a big obstacle and is seen as impossible by some so they get easily discouraged. The message that Hansberry is trying to convey is nothing but truth and I bet that was hard for people both in 1959 and 2023. I don't know how the book ends but maybe it can be seen as motivation to not lose hope. That sounds stupid but I don't know.

Where does this fit in the plot? What's happening?
When Walter says this it is the day before the Younger family gets the life insurance from Big Walter's death. Walter wants to use the money for investing in his liquor shop while Beneatha wants Mama to use it for what she wants but deep down wants to use it for medical school. Mama however doesn't know what to do with it. The questions we had to answer about what we would do if we got money from a loved one's death is tying directly into the book. Even the options we were given is what the Younger family is dealing with. I imagine later in the plot they will be figuring out what to do with the money.

March 15
1) Kind of I mean it definitely shows how small the house is and how they share a bathroom and how Travis has to sleep on the couch. When we initially read the book I pictured the apartment a little more empty and drafty. Like I didn't expect there to be so much on the walls. However, what the characters say has a little more emotion in it so I think it is easier to tell how the characters are feeling in that moment. That being said, the book is basically a script so the book matches to movie word for word and there are plenty of times when they are talking about poverty and money.
2) Ruth is a lot more soft spoken in the movie then I imagined when we read the book but she is still passionate. Walter feels a lot more out spoken then he is in the book but I think that is partially because of how the actors are acting. I don't like how he treats women and specifically Ruth but I guess that just how it was back in 1959. Beneatha I think is also less out spoken then in the book, she still has attitude just not as much. I think the actors were told a certain way to preform the roles which is a little different what I thought they were like in the book.
