The National Employment Law Project works towards the $15 wage act and strongly believes in helping citizens find, keep, and stand up for their jobs, NELP started as a legal clinic at Columbia Law School and not long after, started financing labor groups, helping with legal services and started their journey to equal and secure job opportunities and benefits for all. They are looking to change the way people are looked at and how they are paid. NELP enforces standing up for minority groups in the workplace so that the wage gap can be closed, meaning everyone is treated and paid equally in the workplace. They take action by asking people to advocate for themselves, and others and by asking people to join their fight. NELP has a strong group of individuals and they are good at finding legal solutions to minimize employment problems. They pass laws, protections, and acts that have helped millions of U.S. workers. Helping the NELP organization is a great way to start making an impact on the minimum wage issue.

So, what is mangrove habitat loss? A mangrove, as defined by NOAA (the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), is a type of tree that grows in the coastal/intertidal zone. They are most commonly found in countries with warm and tropical climates, such as Indonesia, Brazil, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, and Australia. One of the biggest ways that mangroves contribute to human survival is by storing greenhouse gases from the atmosphere and helping to slow the rapid increase of climate change, which is why losing our mangroves can have such a devastating impact. Habitat loss happens when humans, either intentionally or unintentionally, interfere with the natural processes of an ecosystem and cause it to collapse. It is for this reason that mangroves are quickly becoming endangered. One example of a way that mangrove habitat loss happens is an unsustainable development like overfishing of shrimp, which throws off the balance of the wildlife of the ecosystem. If there aren’t enough shrimp in the habitat, the animals that prey on the shrimp will not be able to survive, and the ecosystem could collapse, leading to destruction of the habitat and endangering the mangroves. As a part of this club, you will get to learn more about mangroves and the issues they are facing, and you will also have the chance to educate others about this undiscussed issue.

We now know we will have to adapt to survive, but what is adaptation? The first thing to know is that there are two types of adaptations which are behavioral and physical adaptations. Behavioral adaptations are changes in an animal's behavior such as hibernating to survive the winter. Physical adaptations are changes in an animal's physical appearance, for example whales used to have legs but adapted to the ocean to survive. The second thing is that adaptations take years to occur, for example it took generations for snow leopards to get spots. Adaptations are vital to animal survival and they will definitely need to adapt if we want to survive climate change.

Every day, around the world, millions of children work as laborers in often poor and dangerous conditions. This is damaging to both their physical and mental health. As of 2012, an estimated 85 million kids work in hazardous conditions. And on top of that, child labor often keeps kids from going to school or receiving any type of education. According to UNICEF, “In the world’s poorest countries, slightly more than 1 in 5 children are engaged in child labour.” It often happens in the world's least developed countries, but it happens everywhere. Around 500,000 children are working in farms in the United States. They work long hours and can be as young as around eight years old. An estimated 100,000 of these children are injured from this work every year, and yet this remains for the most part legal. So if child labor is so damaging to every aspect of a child’s health, why are we letting this dangerous exploitation of children continue to happen everywhere?

The wage gap affects a lot of women, especially women of different races, in similar but not exactly the same ways. Many women, no matter their race, are affected by the wage gap. Though all races can experience it, women of color and white women are at many times, affected differently. Since people of different races are treated differently regardless of gender, women of color may be passed over for promotion even more than white women. The wage gap is not just simply about women, it encompasses multiple social justice issues, like differences in how races are treated, sexual harrasment in the workplace and schools, and individuals’ gender or sexual orientation. Since the wage gap affects so many women, that is a major reason to join the organization Equal Rights Advocates.

The sounds of dogs barking, cats meowing, and birds squawking overwhelms you as you walk into a pet store that smells like uncleaned crates and day old food. Hundreds of animals are abused each day, with 53% of them being dogs, 16% being cats, and 8% being horses. Animal abuse has been happening for longer than we can remember and only a few organizations have been around to help. The Humane Society has been fighting to end animal abuse for 68 years. The new Langston Hughes Humane Society, will also help stop animal abuse. Everyone should join because we volunteer at animal shelters, we attend peaceful protests, and we fight for what is right.

Did you know that mangrove trees do more carbon sequestration per hectare than any other type of forest? This means that mangroves are a very important ecosystem with a huge impact on global warming, as they store excess carbon and keep it from entering the atmosphere. Mangroves face many human threats every day, such as overfishing, oil drilling, and much more. It is important to protect mangroves from habitat loss and destruction by preserving and restoring their forests, because mangroves are one of the world’s biggest carbon sinks.
