There are a lot of books and sources out there, and no one library can house all of them. Although I struggled through the beginning of the activity, I came out feeling much more comfortable with using the reference books. The activity caused me to realize the amount of information that is available to us that is not on the internet. Something that I found interesting when doing the scavenger hunt was that there is a type of literature dedicated to the word usage of a particular author. These books called correspondences are scattered throughout the resource center dedicated to the works of authors such as Shakespeare and Plato. Thinking about it know, I don’t think I really knew anything about the history of how books were developed. Books primarily contain written texts though some, such as children’s books contain pictures. Some major uses of books are individuals use (diaries), data collection, and record keeping. As you could imagine, as time went on the development of books became more and more advanced. The  earlier forms of written text are displayed through tablets, scrolls, and codex. These forms descreased in popularity due to their disadvantages such as weight and legibility. The  presentation taught me how certain buildups of bugs are good for specific kinds of information. Prior to mass production of books, a lot of work went into physically making a book. Learning the basics of the process of making the materials that would be assembled into a book was surprising as I was not aware of how much of a process it actually was. A lot of time and effort goes into making a book and I completely understand now why we have so few copies of certain texts. It was interesting to see how the style of making a book changes through different time periods and how the changes and improvements made to the process affected the longevity of the book itself. Applying this to our modern understanding of bookmaking is amazing.We are able to mass produce books, which make them more accessible; however, the quality of the book itself is jeopardized in the process. The hands on element of if was a great reinforcement tool to show the difficulty that it would take to make a book in medieval times, and how even a simple stitching could be time consuming. I never realized how much work went into binding pages by hand, let alone the different types of bindings. I had just recently gone to Trinity College in Dublin for a tour of The Book of Kells exhibit where they talked extensively on the process of making and binding the book itself, so it was interesting to see things that related to that and also other processes throughout time that were used.
