I think covid19 has effected education so much because many students are not at the level they are supposed to be. This makes it a lot harder on teachers because there’s so much they have to reteach while still trying to teach everything in the grade curriculum. Also many student’s social skills are lag behind because we were online for two years.

-kateri

During my educational and practicum experiences, a social factor that impacted me during the COVID-19 pandemic was the lack of accessibility and equity in education. The pandemic shed light on the disparities among students and their communities in terms of access to technology and accessing remote learning resources. This also created a lack of connectivity, a drop in participation and engagement for many students.

Social Factors: Extracurriculars

A social factor that has impacted my lived experience in education is extracurricular activities and sports. Since elementary school, I have participated in several extracurriculars such as track and field, cross-country, theatre, and student council. By participating in extracurriculars, I was able to build strong relationships with my peers and coaches. I was also able to connect with the school community. I felt that extracurriculars really made my school experience fun and worthwhile. Going into teaching, I take my love of extracurriculars to help my mentor teacher run the dance team and the annual musical/play. I enjoy giving back to students in this way so that they can have the same fun experience that I had in extracurriculars.

-Emma Ottorino

Social factor: socio-economic status

Though not something that has directly impacted me, socio-economic status is a social factor that I have witnessed having an impact on others' educations. My mom is a teacher and at the beginning of her career she taught in inner-city schools in the Jane and Finch area. She has since moved schools many times and has been teaching in Vaughan for many years but as her daughter I have seen this how this factor has influenced not only her satisfaction with her career but also her teaching style. Having a background in an objectively underfunded area, she has always worked extremely hard to ensure that her students are well looked after at school. She takes extraordinary measures to ensure the best for her students, making her an excellent educator and inspiration, showing me how a social factor such as this does not hinder your abilities but only enhances them.

A social factor that impacted my lived educational experience is extra curricular sports and clubs. At the beginning of high school I was outgoing and open to talking to anyone. I tried out for sports teams and didn't get in, and lost confidence in myself. I stopped trying and didn't join any extra curriculars for a couple of years. During the years that I was not doing extra curricular activities, I only talked to my close friends and became shy. I didn't want to talk to new people. Until grade 11, when my favourite teacher encouraged me to try out for his field hockey team. I had never played before, I didn't even know the rules. I made the team. Not only did this team help me to learn something new that I would have never thought of playing or trying before, but it also helped bring up my confidence to talk to new people and make friends. The friends I made on that team are still my friends today.

A social factor that impacted my high school experience was peer group dynamics and social cliques. Students often form groups based on shared interests, extracurricular activities, or cultural backgrounds and these groups can influence your sense of belonging, friendships, and participation in school events.

For me, I was in an arts school, in the dance program where the shared cultural values, artistic discipline, or external studio connections could have fostered a sense of community. Instead, it highlighted social divisions. Such dynamics shaped my experience by posing challenges in navigating group interactions and social acceptance. It did not foster a sense of community for me at all. The demanding studio environment and weekend competitions fostered a competitive mindset among dance students, which spilled over into school dance classes. This created pressure to excel, leading to comparisons of skills, favoritism, and even heightened expectations. Outside school, the same competitive culture influenced peer interactions, with students vying for recognition or forming cliques based on skill levels or shared studio affiliations. I often felt alienated, neglected, left out and dismissed, especially when I excelled at weekend competitions against fellow classmates. Navigating all of this socially was extremely difficult at times as teachers were unaware or unwilling to address these important issues so common among dance students.

As a future teacher, I am committed to challenging this norm, particularly in high schools where a competitive atmosphere often still prevails. I will strive to remain mindful of its presence and actively work to foster a more inclusive and collaborative environment.

A social factor that really impacted me was the COVID-19 pandemic during my transition from Grade 12 to the first two years of university. It changed the way I experienced school and made it harder to connect with others.

In Grade 12, big events like prom and graduation were canceled or held online, which was disappointing because those moments are supposed to be special. Starting university online was tough too, since it made it harder to meet new people and feel like part of the school community.

Even though it was difficult, I learned how to adapt. I got better at managing my time, reaching out to classmates online, and taking care of myself when things felt overwhelming. It showed me how important it is to stay connected with others, even if it’s virtual.

Looking back, COVID-19 taught me to be flexible and strong when things don’t go as planned, and it made me appreciate the value of community and support even more.

The COVID-19 pandemic. I didn't get to go to prom or graduation. The first year of my university program was online. Doing theatre/drama for school meant being infront of a screen within 4 walls of a room. I got farther from many friends and didn't get to make as much during the first years of university.

Covid really impacted me. I was online for the first half of my last year of undergrad. The cycle of zoom meetings felt like I was not doing any education. I got really bored of it and I saw firsthand how it impacted younger students. They became so accustomed to being online and not really interacting respectfully with their peers.

I think my own education was dramatically impacted by discovering a sport I loved outside of the curriculum! I was a socially awkward loner, so I had no friends, I was okay at studies at school, but my brother outshone me, and PE was a horrible class! Then I discovered canoe racing! I had something I liked doing, and that I was good at. I became competent at sports instead of the guy who couldn't kick a ball. I made friends who I liked spending time with, some of whom remain friends to this day, and most of all I discovered if I tried to do other things I could become good at them too! I think discovering who I was this way was what fundamentally made me who I am today!
