In "My Son My Executioner", the word and thought of death is repeated often. The theme of the poem is love but it is darkened by referring to death repeatedly.
"Sweet death, small son, our instrument

     Of immortality,

Your cries and hunger document

Our bodily decay."
This poem talks about a precious new life but also talks about death and that is probably to put it in perspective for the readers. The purpose of this is that the speaker is trying to draw attention to the shortness of life.

One word that has multiple meanings is "death". Death is usually thought of as violent and negative however the speaker uses the word "sweet" in front of it to give it multiple meanings. He uses this multiple meaning phrase to show that the speaker does not hate the son for killing him slowly because they love the child.

The speaker of this poem is a new parent. As one can gather from the poem we see that this is a parents who's child was just born and is learning the hardships of parenthood.
"Sweet death, small son, our instrument

     Of immortality,

Your cries and hunger document

Our bodily decay."
From this quote we can see that there is no real hatred toward the child.

The biggest metaphor that is used throughout the poem is when the speaker repeatedly compares his son to an executioner, The speaker makes a connection between his sons crying to killing him slowly.
"Your cries and hunger document Our bodily decay"
This metaphor makes the readers see the child as harmful however the diction of the poem does not imply that the child is harmful in fact the poem is portrays the child as loved.
