In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee Scott gets into a fight with a boy named Francis. She tells her uncle why she did it so he would understand, later that night when she went to get water she overheard her father Atticus and her Uncle jack talking about her. Atticus says, “scout’s gotta learn to keep her head and learn soon, with what’s in store for her these next few months”(87-88) This is important because it shows how events in your life teach you to be a better person. This is important because it teaches good values and that’s why I think TKAM should be apart of high school curriculum

In the book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee Scout is eavesdropping on a conversation between Atticus and her Uncle Jack. Uncle Jack says to Atticus, “She said I didn’t understand children much and told me why. She was quite right. Atticus, she told me how I should have treated her- oh dear, I’m so sorry I romped on her”(87). Uncle Jack feels bad for punishing and hitting Scout before he heard her side of the story and he wants to change. This quote shows why To Kill a Mockingbird should be used in the high school English curriculum because it’s an example of good things that happen in the book and how lessons can be learned from reading it.

In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee TKAM should be used in the high school English curriculum. Scout and her family are at there aunts house for Christmas and Scout is talking to her cousin Francis when he says “He’s nothin’ but a 🤬-lover”(83). Francis is talking about Atticus and how he is going to defend Tom Robinson in court. This is showing that even the youth can be racist but they think it’s ok but Scout doesn’t know what that means probably because Atticus has taught her to be a decent human being. This is why TKAM should be in the English curriculum because this is showing two youth, one innocent and one not so nice talking about a serious subject and it’s showing that down south people thought differently and people shouldn’t be afraid to read that.

At home after Scout asks if this is true, Atticus says, “If I didn’t, I couldn’t hold my head up in town,” (75). Atticus is defending Tom Robinson and will probably lose, but Atticus still wants to defend Tom. This is showing one of the many little lessons To Kill A Mockingbird teaches to its readers.

In the novel, To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, there are many times within the text that relate back to modern day society and problems we are having today. One time that this happens is when Scout recalls, “ He had announced on the schoolyard the day before that Scout Finches dads defended n******(74)”. I believe this quote relates highly to present day society and the racism encountered on a daily basis. Considering how long ago this novel took place it is almost astonishing that racism isn’t eradicated completely. For these reasons I believe it is beneficial for students to be thought this text within school.

In the book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the situations of the book show that yes To Kill a Mockingbird should be included in the high school curriculum. Scout, Jem and Atticus go to a family reunion with the Finches and many of them get to talking. Scout begins talking with Francis and Francis says some things Scout doesn’t like one thing leads to another and Scout punches Francis. When she’s defending herself to Uncle Jack she says, “ A n***** lover. I ain’t very sure what it means, but the way Francis said it—tell you one thing right now, Uncle Jack, I’ll be—I swear before God if I’ll sit there and let him say somethin’ about Atticus”(86). Scout is saying that she punched Francis because he was talking bad about Atticus even though she didn’t know what the words Francis were saying even meant. This is important because it shows Scout’s character and how she isn’t afraid to start a fight or standing up for what she thinks. This supports why the book should stay in the curriculum because people nowadays need to know what things were like in that time period. This part of the book really shows what it was like through just throwing that word around like it means nothing while being offensive at the same time, and it shows people starting to take a stand against that word.

ICED 2- The novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee should be included in schools. At this point in the novel it’s Christmas time and Scout is seeing her family, Atticus is talking to his brother Jack (referred to as Uncle Jack throughout the novel) about his trial and says, “the only thing we’ve got is a black man’s word against the Ewells’. The evidence boils down to you-did—- I-didn’t. The jury couldn’t possibly be expected to take Tom Robinson’s word against the Ewells’” (88). This quote shows us how much sway the Ewells have in town, and how much Atticus is struggling/stressing about his case. This quote is important because it shows us what it was like to have a case involving an African American vs a white person at the time, and the struggles and consequences one can face when taking a case like this. Therefor this novel should be taught in schools because of the insight it gives us to this country’s history

In Lee’s novel To Kill A Mockingbird, Scout gets into an argument at school and the girl Cecil was making fun of Scout’s dad. Scout asks her dad why he defends n******, her dad responds “Of course I do. Don’t say n****r, Scout. That’s common” (75). This quote shows that in their household it is unacceptable to use that kind of language. This quote proves that this book should be used in high school curriculum because it shows that it’s low of a person to say things like that. It also shows that Scout’s dad would defend someone most people usually wouldn’t. That quote shows morals that high school student could take away from the book.

In the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, Lee uses serious atmosphere and foreshadowing to illustrate the idea that you have to put yourself in other people’s shoes. In the exposition of the novel, we learn that Scout is a young girl living with her father Atticus and her brother Jem. Scout, Jem and their friend Dill make up stories about their neighbor, Boo Radley. Atticus then scolds Scout and says “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view, until you can climb into his skin and walk around in it” (30). Lee is directly using serious atmosphere to illustrate how much Atticus takes seriously. This makes the reader uncomfortable just like Scout is feeling. Even though the reader is uncomfortable, it urges them to go on and learn the valuable lesson.

In the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, By Harper Lee, Atticus gives Scout and Jem their air-rifles but wouldn’t teach them to shoot. He wanted them to only shoot at tin cans but he knew they would shoot at birds. Atticus says“ Shoot at all the blue jays you want but remember it is a sin to kill a mockingbird”(90). This quote is important because the book is about two kids growing up back in the 20’s. Back in the 20’s this could be like any normal book but since society has changed so much that people think the book shouldn’t be taught in the English curriculum. That’s like saying we shouldn’t learn about this history at all even like in History. Not all history needs to be taught in that class. This relates back to my quote because it was normal for people to casually shoot birds or give their kids weapons, but nowadays that is unusual to see.

In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Atticus is a lawyer who has to defend a black man in the south where there is extreme racism and discrimination. When talking to his brother Atticus says, “Why reasonable people go stark raving mad when anything involving a Negro comes up, is something I don’t pretend to understand” (88). This quote is important because it is showing how poorly people of color were treated in that time. Atticus is defending a black man when everybody else will be against him, so they will be against Atticus, too. This quote shows that To Kill a Mockingbird should be used in high school English curriculum because it is a good example of what life was like in the 1930s.

In the novel To kill a mockingbird by Harper Lee teaches many lessons through the young character scout. One lesson occurs in chapter 9 when scout returns from school after fighting with Cecil Jacobs about calling her father a N**** lover. She asks Atticus about the world and it’s meaning an He tells her not to say such a word but she stubbornly replies saying everyone else says it. Atticus then states “From now on it’ll be everybody less one—“(75). This small sentence is very important because Atticus shuts down her excuse to follow the crowd and be her own person which is a good lesson because he wants his kids to build their own character rather than doing what everyone else does. This not only is significant for scout but it’s also a lesson for everyone. A short lesson to simply be you which is why To kill a mockingbird should be in the English curriculum for all the mini and large lessons taught throughout the book.

In chapter 9 Scout explains “He had announced in the schoolyard the day before that Scout Finch’s daddy defended niggers. I denied it, but told Jem. “What’d he mean sayin’ that? (74). While Scout was at school she got into a fight because a student insulted her father. She later told her brother that she didn’t actually know what the kid meant. This quote defends the claim that this book should be used in the high school curriculum because children at school were made fun of because of things they didn’t understand.

In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Mrs. Dubose was calling Atticus an ‘n’ lover. Jem lashes out and ruins her flowers. Unsure what an ‘n’ lover is, Scout asked Atticus. He explained it and then she asked if he was an ‘n’ lover. He responded, “I certainly am. I do my best to love everybody... I’m hard put, sometimes—baby, it’s never an insult to be called what somebody thinks is a bad name. It just shows you how poor that person is, it doesn’t hurt you” (108). This quote shows that Atticus doesn’t believe in racism and rather believes that you should love everyone. It shows that despite all the hatred, there is still a chance for love and change. Therefore To Kill a Mockingbird should be taught in the high school English curriculum because people need to know there is light even though all of the darkness.

Scout is now hearing all the things people are saying about her father and is getting upset. When scout is talking to Francis he says, “but now he (Atticus)turns out to be a n***** lover we’ll never be able to walk the streets of maycomb agin” (83). Francis is telling scout that her father is bring shame to the family and ruining the reputation of the family; which is now upsetting scout and pushing her to hurt Francis. This shows that students should read this book in school because it shows that back in the day people were cruel and hurtful to people just based on their color. And reading the book helps people understand the change that has happened today but also helps push people to want more change and equality.

Along with the things that might get thrown at the family. As Atticus told Jack," I just hope that Jem and Scout come to me for their answers instead of listening to the town. I hope they trust me enough.” (pg 88). Atticus hopes that his children will come and get answers from him so he can give the truth. Instead of what they hear around town that could be false or misleading. Showing us that Atticus want his children to follow their own path instead of the path everyone follows. Therefore To Kill A Mockingbird should be used in the high school English curriculum.

In the novel “To Kill a Mockingbird” By Harper Lee should be used in the High School English curriculum due to the fact that High Schoolers should be informed of our internal conflicts in the US and shouldn’t shy away from the dark actions of citizens in US history. Scout’s father Atticus is a lawyer. There is controversy in Atticus’ case that involves a African American who is accused of rape. Scout is at a Christmas gathering with other family members. Scout is talking with Francis about Dill for a little bit. Then Francis brings up this, “If Uncle Atticus lets you run around with stray dogs, that’s his own business, like Grandma says, so it ain’t your fault. I guess it ain’t your fault if Uncle Atticus is a niggerlover” (83). Francis tells Scout this to set her off. Which leads to her punching Francis in face because of what Francis said. Scout doesn’t really know what it means but, she does know that this doesn’t sound like a good gesture to Atticus. We cannot shy away from the dark past of the US. If we don’t be informed of this it will happen again history will repeat. Atticus
responds with, "The main one is, I
couldn't hold up my head in town " (75).
This shows that Atticus can't bring
himself to not defend someone
because or their race.

In the novel,’To Kill A Mockingbird’ by Harper Lee, Scout, Jem, and Dill all sneak into Boo Radleys hard to peak in his window to see if he’s actually in there, as there doing so they see a figure and run. As they’re running they hear a gunshot and sprint home. A few minutes after the gunshot, all of the neighbors crowd around Boo Radleys house, as Scout, Jem, and Dill walk up to the crowd of neighbors and as what happened, to which Missing Maude answered,”Mr. Radley shot at a neg** in his collard patch”(54).This shows how Un-diverse the neighborhood is because Miss Maude could’ve phrased that better instead of noting that Boo was shooting at an African American. This shows how aware we should be and it’s important to learn about this diversity change in school.

In the book To Kill a In the book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee Scout is talking to Atticus about what happened with Cecil Jacobs. Atticus than says to
Scout, “I’m simply defending a Negro his name’s Tom Robinson”(75).
Atticus is explaining to Scout that there’s nothing wrong with
defending a African-American person and he has to do his job no matter
what. This quote shows why To Kill a Mockingbird should be used in the
high school English curriculum because it’s an example that shows that
the book isn’t just full of racist and bad things but it also has
things in it that are positive and show a good way of thinking.
