I haven't got a particular project in mind but I think to engage a wider audience there needs to be a strong link between the data that is being collected and the change that could help to deliver. It shouldn't be data for datas sake but focused around a specific cause that can mobilise people.

For the data to be taken seriously and used by decision makers it needs to be viewed as valid and robust so efforts need to go into ensuring that anything collected is reliable. There is nothing worse than spending hours collecting data only for it not to be used for something meaningful.
