As secondary trained (assumption?) teachers, how did you move to such an integrated approach? There is concern in our school that those subject specific trained teachers would struggle to teach subjects outside of their training. What support did you offer teachers to enable this?

We have all struggled throughout the journey. Not everyone in the teams is willing to teach outside of their subject area - its a slow progression. Usually teachers have 2-3 subjects they really enjoy and will opt for content to do with those. One term we had a challenge within our whanau(team) to teach content we were extremely uncomfortable/hadnt taught (of course we gave sufficient time to build knowledge and guidance to help- 2weeks to prep). Everyone gave it a go and in fact some loved it so much that they continued to teach that content. Dif subject areas have offered many one off workshops of skills to staff in other curriculum areas but many are reluctant to use the help offered.

Support in terms of content comes from knowing there is a specialist in your group who you should be able to approach. Succeeding in teaching something new gave our teachers a buzz and the boost to continue to challenge themselves outside of their curriculum area. If you ahve any further questions get in touch via S.Berridge@alfristoncollege.school.nz

I'm really curious about how you frame the questions every term to find out what students want to learn next.
