This painting was made by Francisco Goya who was inspired by the Napoleonic invasion. It portrays people that are prisoners of not only way, but also mental injustice and cruelty. It has very minimal color to represent gloom, suffering and darkness.

When reading "Prison," Fusang reveals a lot about Chinese culture. We are able to see through her experiences that children are not as valued or cared for in certain cultures. She also represents the theme: Sometimes people do not have control over their life because of circumstances that leave that trapped and powerless.

The Connections I Made

“Prison” by Yiyun Li, reveals a harsh reality where some people are just never given the same opportunities as others. Fusang, the woman that has volunteered to carry Yilan’s child, never feels like she has control over her life. When she was a child she was sold by her parents to a family that needed a wife for their unintellectual husband. She was never given a choice and could not make her own decisions. Later, when she takes on the task of carrying Yilan’s baby, she still has no control over her life. She barely has anyone that cares about her and she has no opportunities to escape. This theme directly connected to the poem “The Life That I Have” by Leo Marks. This poem shortly expresses the depressing emotions of of woman who was a secret agent during WWII. She was captured by the Nazis during one of her missions and it is reported that she was tortured and later killed. Throughout the poem she continues to say that her life is all that she has, and she has no control over it.

This clearly connects to the theme of “Prison” and Fusang. Both women have no power over what happens in their lives and the people around them govern what they do. Also connecting to “Prison,” I found a old painting that summarized the emotions of Fusang. The painting shows multiple prisoners of war, but it is also meant to represent the mental imprisonment and cruelty that people can feel. Fusang, had no control over her life and somewhat expressed an emotional wasteland. She had little emotion, or at least she did not express any, and she was very mentally isolated.
