Being a mindful leader starts with ones self...all too often leaders are caught up on all the things that need to get done and create a multitasking work ethic which ultimately ends up with nothing being done well. Creating the space for reflection and deep thinking is a real challenge and it is not until you have taken the time to practise mindfulness regularly (like exercising or going to the gym...the more you do it the better you get) that the benefits become apparent. I sometimes see those mindful moments like slow motion where everything becomes crystal clear and decision making becomes easier. The challenge still remains on maintaining practise to ensure the mindfulness benefits can be regularly realised.

I find that I need to formally schedule it in or otherwise I will only practise mindfulness intermittently. Using a guided app (such as Insight Timer) really helped me to get started and now that I have been more consistent I do feel that my attention and even my productivity throughout the day has improved. I just feel more focused overall. I aim for a minimum of 10 minutes/day and more when I have the time.

I have been practicing mindfulness and reflective practice journaling for around 10 years now and found it to be a saviour when times were harder than normal. Really helped me sort out some big issues. 7 years ago I met Stan Steindl (Clinical Psychologist) who does work on compassion and self compassion which I was able to share and teach to students. Due to these experiences my mindfulness is a little different today then to when I was learning and it is now a built in system for my social emotional well being that is a cycle of eating well (nutritiously), exercising at the gym and for a challenge with my evil personal trainer (but I love her for it), Feeding my 'P-Dog' (look it up) and choosing to be grateful for 3 things every night before I go to sleep. This allows me a level of Calm that allows me to do what I do. It is part of my life. Sue Cosgrove

My mindfulness journey has been a forty eight year voyage of discovery. I began reading the Bible, discovering a unique relationship with Someone who truly loves, guides and comforts me. This relationship is so strong, it cannot be broken and is my primary source of love. I started writing a reflective journal around thirty years ago. It has been an on-again, off-again practise (mostly on) which has resulted in many handwritten books on my bookshelf. The contents of these notebooks rarely see the light of day, but somehow, I know that I have benefited from their writing, from the soul-searching and from the knowledge that is in them. I only started practising meditation in the last couple of years and have become quite given to it. Together, these practises sustain me when times are not ideal, teach me about myself and others, help to give me purpose and lead me to living a better life.
