The burning book symbolizes the destruction of knowledge. A book holds knowledge which is available to anyone who wishes to read it, but in Fahrenheit 451 society shuns knowledge so that life can be more fun. People became ignorant about what happens in the world around them and decided not to think about anything that happens in it. The quote above is said by character named Clarisse, she is a person who likes to think instead of being like everyone else. Clarisse is also a perfect example of knowledge, as how the world around her is ignorance.

The quote is found the day after Mildred had drugged herself, and the machines cleaned her system. The humming of the electronic bees in her ear comes from the Seashells which makes her unaware of her surroundings and what she's doing.

The Seashells represent ignorance because they don't stop making noise. If you were to put a seashell by your ear, you would hear the continuous noise of the ocean. In this case, the walls continue to talk to her, and allows her to interact with them, which makes her unaware of the real world that surrounds her. The continuous noise of the Seashells in her ears doesn't allow her to think.
