Mago is Reyna's older sister. She is four years older than Reyna, and a year older than her brother Carlos. She is caring, selfless, and smart. Reyna is constantly comparing herself to Mago, stating that she will never be as pretty as her, and how beautiful she is. Mago serves as a parental figure in Reyna and Carlos' life after their parents leave for El Otro Lado.

This passage from the book marks when Mago's life completely changed. At the time, Mago was only eight years old, but was tasked by Mami to be Reyna and Carlos' "little mother." From this point forward, Mago was no longer a little girl, she was all that her siblings had, and she promised to do everything in her power to protect them.

What does Mago symbolize?

Mago is the light that never goes out in The Distance Between Us. Without fail, no matter how horrible things get for Reyna, Mago is there to help. From their childhood in Mexico to growing up in America, from their neglectful mother to their abusive father, Mago is always there to love and protect her siblings. Mago cares for Reyna more than either of their parents ever did. The most important example of Reyna and Mago's relationship is when Reyna is dancing with her father at her Quinceanera. She realizes that even though she dreamed of dancing with Papi her whole life, she should be dancing with Mago.
