At this year's Annual Member Meeting we're going to be hosting member-led discussion spaces on July 13th. In order to get an idea of the topics members would like to engage each other about, we created this padlet to begin accepting proposals for discussion topics or themes! Discussion spaces will be about 1-2 hours. Posts can be added by clicking the "+" button which should be in the bottom right corner of the page.

NESAWG's MapJam! is the creation of community-led GIS Mapping thru movement building for a racial equity transformation of the farm and food system in the Northeast region. We would like to share how we are working collaboratively with groups and organizations (and continue engaging more folx!) to roll out MapJams! -- the regional mapping of the farm and food system in the Northeast with the establishment of a BIPOC regional stakeholder group, local hubs, and an interactive website. We are doing translocal organizing work using digital tools for grassroots organizing - including GIS and AI technology. We would also like to share the benefits and resources that our MapJams! can provide for the larger community, and discuss some of the digital tools that are making this possible.

Housing Co-ops as Neighborhood-Level Bases of Operation for Organizing and Power Building - Submitted by Adrian Madriz (SMASH)

In this workshop, SMASH will share about its work in establishing two affordable housing cooperatives on its community land trust in Miami, FL. The co-ops are the centerpiece of an ecosystem of strategies meant to build power for housing and climate justice. The co-ops house community leaders engaged in outreach and relationship building with neighbors to recruit support for the current campaign, the Miami Housing Justice Agenda to make housing a human right.

This model can be adapted by many different kinds of causes in order to build community power, and as a way to showcase the unique advantages of new economy models to skeptical neighbors, potentially transforming them into movement allies.

Damn! Organizing across a state is hard ya'll. We move at different speeds, are responding to different crises, and have different interests. That doesn't even take into consideration that Capitalism/philanthropy/501c3 industrial complex doesn't want us to come together. Plus, we have to build trust, which takes time and space. Do you have any of that, because I barely do. So what does/will it take to build networks across geographies, cultures, identities, and needs? Let's come together to imagine the enabling infrastructures we need to build robust networks that not only think about alt economies, but build them.
