I decided to do my journey map as if it was a street. The city sign in the top left says Morocco because this is where the story takes place. The green rectangles along the street are meant to be street signs, and they all include an important step in the boy's journey. The street signs are in line from top right to bottom left. In the bottom right, I wrote "the boy's journey", because the boy is the subject of my journey map.

This book is a good depiction of both patience and selflessness. In the beginning, he visited the old woman and the man multiple times before he could find out the story behind the bird and the yarn, displaying patience. In the end of the story, the boy tells different stories to the dust storm night after night. He has a plan all along to defeat the dust storm. He is patient and sticks to his plan and eventually defeats the sand storm saving the whole town. The journey map is effective for students to see the progression of the story.

Based on the categories in the book, I think that this story fits in the animal fantasy category. The blue water bird has humanlike qualities which makes it fall under this category.

I decided to do my journey map as it follows April flying through the plot. April and Esme are sisters who are tooth fairies. They are able to go collect their very first tooth from a little boy across the highway. They conquer all odds, such as foxes and waking eyelids. They were able to bring the tooth back and hang it with their parents for all the other fairies to see and cheer. This book shows how determination and trust can allow anyone to conquer their fears and follow their dreams.

This activity can help students analyze the story within their minds and put it to paper. Authentic discussions between peers can rise from this activity as they share aloud.

Based on the categories in the book, I think that this story is within the mythical creature fantasy category. Tooth Fairies and are mythical creatures that humankind has made up which makes it fall under this category.

Jolee Shields: A Sick Day for Amos McGee

I read the book A Sick Day for Amos McGee. I chose to do my journey map following the main character Amos McGee.

This book shows the value of friendship. Amos is a great friend to the animals at the city zoo. He goes to the zoo every day and plays games and reads to the animals. One day he wakes up sick. The animals are sad that Amos is not there to entertain them. The animals decide to get on the same city bus that Amos takes to visit them and visit Amos at his home. The animals now take care of Amos. This shows the importance of taking care of your friends and how valuable a friendship like this is.
A journey map tells us details of the story without giving away everything. I think that creating journey maps in the classroom can be a great way for students to find a new story to read. Looking at a journey map can show you the overall idea and a few details that have an impact on the story.

Based on the categories in chapter 8, this book fits in the cumulative tales category. It is simple, rhythmic, and humorous. I would not say that it is a funny book that includes jokes but it is humorous to think about animals on a bus and taking care of a human.

I read the book The Three Ninja Pigs. I decided to do my journey map on pig #3. This journey map shows how pig #3 decides that she is going to learn karate in order to take down the bad wolf. She practiced a ton until she is very confident in her skills and able to earn the black belt. The wolf tries to mess with her two pig brothers first and he ends up chasing them back to pig #3. But pig #3 was not going to let anything slide with the wolf. He tried to act like he was not scared of her but he was because he knew that he needed to leave and not return. The last part of my journey map shows that the three pigs opened their own Dojo where they taught karate.
The personal and academic values of the book are it can teach them the importance of not letting someone bully you. To make sure to stand up for yourself and know how strong and brave you are. As for the effectiveness of the journey map to students it can show them that they know how to summarize a story and be able to show the story line of one specific character which goes along with comprehension.
Based on the categories of books I read in Chapter 8, this book fits under the category of Animal Fantasies since the pigs take on human like characteristics of talking, fighting, and having emotions. The universal theme that is presented in the book is hard-work pays off.

I read the book, The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. I chose to make my map following the character Edward Tulane.

This book has really great themes and the journey map really helps to explain the themes and how they are present in the book. Edward the rabbit in the story truly loved his owner and when he got lost the journey to find his owner again was a journey to find love again. Edward shows lost love and heartbreak in the journey and he shows how he is trying to love again. This shows how a brokenheart will always learn to love again. The journey map is a good way to show the journey throughout the story and use art to get your thoughts of the story on paper.

This book fits under the category of Animal Fantasies because it shows Edward the rabbit inhibit human feelings. The universal theme is presented through these human emotions and this is what made the book so powerful.

I did my drawing based on the main character. This book has a theme surrounding the loneliness of China's one child rule. It starts with the child home alone and feeling lonely so he goes and explores where he meets a stag in the woods and they go on an adventure together, the child found a friend. Then when their adventure comes to an end the child returns home and his family is back.

This fits under the category of Animal Fantasy because the stag has more magical qualities of being nurturing to the child and becoming friends with him. The theme is loneliness and how to cope with this feeling.

I think that the journey map is a good tool for students to use so that they can really pinpoint big ideas in the plot and explain it clearly.

I did this drawing based on the two brothers and their joinery throughout the story of learning the rules of summer. Together you watch their journey at the beginning of summer, learning those rules together as a team, before the darkness of winter begins and takes them away from summer altogether.

The book shows such a true bond between brothers figuring out the rules almost together as a team. It does not give much detail about the small things, but it showed true the small facts of the rules and I really wanted to bring that to life in my journey map. I wanted it to be simple, just like the book itself, but also show the truth behind the book of how winter was coming and how the sadness of leaving it behind was coming into their rules of summer.

This book fits under the category of Unusual Categories and Strange Situations, specifically looking at the category of summer and having different situations within the summer that help to make up rules. The universal theme of rules, brotherly relationships and friends help to make up the story.

I think a journey map is important for students to use and recognize to help them really understand the big ideas within the story and understand the key points that make up the storyline.

My story map follows along with the book titled The City of Ember. It starts with an image of the city of Ember. Ember is beneath the ground and has been there for nearly two centuries. The people that live there fled from above when dangers from above forced them down there, so they restarted life and everything has been working until now. The energy is starting to run out. The second image shown is the empty food storage because the city is starting to run out of resources but the mayor is not letting the people of the city know and is keeping them in the "dark". Lina is the main character of the story and she knows that time is running out. She knows that she needs to figure out what is above in order to save herself and her sister Poppy. Lina's grandmother, who is very forgetful and old, one day pulls down a box that was from her late grandfather who used to be a mayor but has since passed. Lina discovers in the box a note with a message on it and begins to decode the message. Lina then reaches out to her friend Doon who starts to help her uncover how they will find their way out without getting caught. Lina and Doon find an underground river and take Poppy with them to find the way to the above. That is where they find a secret door that leads them out. There they find that everything that they had been told for the past years had been a lie...

This book highlights having scarce resources and goes into how the world could be in a science fiction way. It also highlights the power of higher beings in the government and the rebellion of the youth. This book shows how bravery can help solve the unknown.

Based on the categories, I think that this book is within Science Fiction and Science Fantasy category. The universal themes that are seen throughout this book are mystery, bravery, control/power, and friendship.

My journey map follows along the plot of the story. April and Esme are hoping to be able to receive the tooth from Daniel themselves. Once their parents give them the okay, they are able to fly over to his house, grab his tooth that is found in a glass of water, and leave a coin under a pillow all before he wakes up! My journey map follows exactly that. It starts with April and Esme asking permission to get the tooth themselves and convinced them to be able to do it! From there, it takes us to their house where they then make their way over to Daniel's house and grab his tooth from the water glass, then back to their house to show their parents!

I think that this activity is a great activity to use in a classroom because it lets children use their creativity and imagination. It also will allow them to dig a little deeper into the text and read more into it so that they can create the journey map. I loved doing this activity and to this book specifically because I was able to use my creativity and make it my own, while also showing my knowledge of the book itself.

Based on the categories in this chapter, I think books related heavily to the ethical creature and fantasy category. I think that because tooth fairies are mythical creatures and a fantasy that this would be the perfect category for this book!

The map shows the journey that Charlotte went through and how her life was impacted in being friends with Wilbur. Charlotte is a very trustworthy friend who wants to save Wilbur from being slaughtered from Mr. Zuckerman, who owns the barn they all live in. Charlotte would not only give Wilbur advice, but also the other animals in the barn. Charlotte would create messages in her web to try to get her point across to Mr. Zuckerman so he would not slaughter Wilbur. Eventually, Charlottes life span was coming to an end and Wilbur got sad, but when Charlotte did die and her egg sac exploding it led to many new babies from Charlotte being born. Only three of Charlotte's daughters stayed with Wilbur to be his friend just like their mom did and new ones are born every spring. Wilbur will always remember Charlottes loyalty and friendship.

I really enjoyed this activity because it had me think more about all of the characters on a deeper meaning and their effects on the story. This book portrays the message of friendship and I think this book would be great to read to students as well as having them do a journey map on the character of their choice.

The book I read was Twinderella, A Fractioned Fairytale. Based on my journey map, two twin sisters argue and clean together, then meet the prince of their dreams at a ball and realize sharing is caring. Both sisters in my book were the main characters and ended their feud.

Twinderella is a math wiz. Her and Cinderella always have to take care of their evil step sisters, and they know they deserve more. They are given lists and lists of chores. Although this story is a fairytale, it's also fantasy fiction. Cinderella is a known story, and it was nice to read a new version of it.

I believe this book falls under the fantasy category. It's all made up, although it could happen!
Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book and thought it was funny with a good rhyme.

The book I read was Charolette's Web, based on the journey map I did it based off of Wilbur the pig. I did this journey based off of his life that was given in the book. How he was the runt of the litter, but the young girl Fern saved him and became best friends. However, her dad had a different story and a spider named Charlotte helped to save him by writing words in her web like "Some Pig" or Terrific". Fern's dad enters Wilbur into the county fair and if he wins, he won't kill him. Charlotte helped Wilbur one last time by writing the word "Humble" in her web. Wilbur won second and was able to live, he made 3 new best friends, Charlotte's children.

I loved this story and activity because it helped me come back to my childhood. This was one on the stories that I read all the time as a kid. This activity/book is perfect for students to do off a book they love or want to learn more about.

This fits into the category of Animal Fantasies because of how it is based on animals talking and being able to communicate while having fun.

The book I read was Dust Devil. I chose to create my journey map of the main character, who was nicknamed Swamp Angel who was almost like a giant and got to big for Tennesse and had to move to Montana. When she got there she realized their was no horse that was big enough to carry her. Soon a storm like a tornado came and Swamp Angel had to just hop on a horse, and she ended up getting very lucky, they soon become inseparable. This was all represented in my journey map.

I think the effectiveness of a journey map would be for the students to dive deeper into the plot of a story. Once I started doing the map I noticed I understood the book I was reading better so I definitely think this is an effective way to work on comprehension with students. I would say this book falls under the fantasy category and universal themes might be good connections, and that as long as you have somebody or something you can rely on and depend on, you can get through the toughs.

Chance Bussard: April and Esme Tooth Fairies

I read the book April and Esme tooth fairies. It was a super cute modern twist on who the tooth fairy was, and two sisters going to collect their tooth for the first time. I chose to draw a map of their journey from their home, to the boys house, and back. I would say this book falls between Fantasy based in Folklore, and Miniature worlds. I say this because the Tooth fairy at least in North America is a mythical creature that we believe comes to collect our teeth, it is something that has been believed for generations. Additionally, in the book there is story of a 'fairy place' which I think would make the story also fall into miniature worlds. I think a journey map is a fun way to get students really focused on the story, and where characters stem from.
