The main culture that has made me who I am is my race/ethnicity, which is the Tongan culture. Growing up, I was instilled with many customs and traditions that come with being Tongan, and they are customs and traditions that I value and hold close to this day. The Tongan culture is all about respect, family, religion, etc. which are all aspects about myself that I prioritize. I love my culture and the things that it teaches me. I feel like I would be a completely different person if I wasn’t Tongan and my values would be way different. Being Tongan has shaped the way I view and treat others, and the way I expect/hope for others to view and treat me. My experiences as a Tongan are unique and I don’t take that for granted.

My religion is a big part of who I am, and something I am proud of despite the opinions others may have on it, which tends not to be a good one. I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and identify with the GOOD parts of LDS culture. Being a member of the church has shaped my values and beliefs and has played a huge role in the decisions I make for myself on a day to day basis. Just like being Tongan, I know I would be a completely different person if I was of another faith. One thing that is specific to being LDS is the option to serve an LDS mission, where one can leave their family starting at the age of 18 and live in a whole different state or country for 18 months to 2 years sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I had the opportunity to do this for 18 months in Seattle, Washington, and as you can imagine, Seattle is much much different than Utah. My experiences as a missionary for my church helped me to strengthen my love for myself and those around me. It helped me learn how to communicate and build healthy relationships and friendships with others. I consider it to be one of my greatest accomplishments to this day and it is an experience I hold near and dear to my heart. My mission has definitely strengthened my desire to continue practicing my religion.

I love going to the gym and working out, and consider myself to be part of gym culture. My love for fitness and health actually began on my mission, because we had to exercise for 30 minutes every morning. When I came home, I lost sight of it, but then I had a manager at one job who was a gym rat and reignited my love for being healthy and fit. I go every morning now, and always set goals for myself. I feel guilty when I miss a day or eat bad. Going to the gym has given me a sense of purpose and has also helped me build a lot of confidence in areas where I lacked it. It is also really therapeutic and feels good to take out anger and stress on the weights.

The last culture I fit into is girlfriend culture. I love my boyfriend soooo much and he is my best friend. Being with him has made me the happiest person ever and I love that we have such a good relationship too, because not a lot of couples have that. He gives me something to look forward to everyday and always have so much fun. He has also helped me with my confidence and pushes and motivates me to do better.
