I think it's not too late for me to learn a new language. Since there are so many Chinese living in Canada and I might encounter them at work in the future so I think it's a good skill to have. My goal is to be able to chat with Chinese friends at the end of the course. Because of this, I'm interested in learning about topics that can be talked about in a daily setting, like what did you do yesterday, how was it, something like this.

My goals haven't changed much throughout the course. I think I've been able to achieve my goals. I remember reading a sign outside a bank, and I could only recognize the last two characters, which is 中心. Another word that I recognized a lot is 奶茶. Since I really love drinking bubble tea, I see 奶茶 a lot. 

Whenever I go to malls like Aberdeen or Crystal Mall, the vendors often mistaken me as a Chinese and they started speaking Chinese to me. The phrase that they often greeted me with is 有什么想找吗？, which means that Are you looking for anything today. Before, I couldn't even understand anything that the store vendors said to me, even a word, so I felt so proud of myself. It's like an accomplishment.

I was being friend with one international student in my Culinary class and turns out she's Chinese. Her English isn't the best so I tried my best to explain what's going on in the class to her using body language. It was actually a fun experience and at that time I wished that I could speak Chinese so we can communicate easier.

I used to work at Club Monaco and there was actually a lot of clients who are Chinese. Even one of my manager is also Chinese. I once encountered a client who only spoke Chinese and so because of that  I have to ask my manager for help. She taught me "白色“ and "黑色”, which means the colour white and the colour black. As I mentioned in my goals and expectations for this course, I think that I could use a lot of Chinese skill in my workplace setting if I knew it back then. It's convenient for the client, who's finding suitable clothes for themselves, and also for me, to be able to help them better. 

When I was researching about Chinese's festivals I found out that Chinese and Vietnamese share a lot of similarities. We all have the Lunar New Year festival, and I also read the story about the monster Nian that scared children. It was actually interesting because in Vietnam we don't have tales like that about the Lunar New Year, it's just a festival that we celebrate, no story behind it. Even though Vietnam and China do share something in similar, we all are unique in our different ways.
