The world has undergone rapid changes in less than a decade with the introduction of the Internet in our lives and widespread use of technology. Almost every transaction is done online and data processing is the most lucrative task of our time. If we, as a nation or country, are supposed to catch up with developed countries and have a leading role worldwide, the first thing we should do is to produce technology in accordance with the requirements of this information and digital era. Easier said than done, of course. To this end, the whole education system must be revised or reformed in accordance with the said requirements. So, how should education be in the 21st century? 

The students of the 21st century are the members of the digital native Z generation. If we want to teach them something, we have to speak their language. The quiet and scary classrooms and strict teachers of the nineties definitely are not fit for the Z generation. There has to be freedom, exchange of opinions, unorthodox teaching techniques and technology in the classrooms. A teacher has to be a mentor, a guide and create a supportive and encouraging learning environment. Students need to be active learners and must be guided to think critically, and most importantly, to think out-of-the-box. They should be encouraged to be creative. Well, but how?

Here is the dilemma: In order to raise creative generations who can acquire and reproduce knowledge, we need creative teachers who are open to constant learning. But most of the teachers are bound with the old traditions of the last century and they are not keen on keeping up with current developments. You cannot create a 3D project with an outdated software. You have to upgrade the program.

In such cases, the planned activity is never productive and is an abortive work. As for the use of technology, I use the interactive flat panel for listening and pronunciation activities or just to add some "fun" in the class. This module covers the Future Classroom tools. The tools are divided into five areas. I have created a huge mind map for those areas, therefore I'm not going to mention them once again. Please see the relevant mind map below. 

The tool kit is a map for the process of adjusting the learning environments in accordance with the requirements of the 21st century. The stakeholders prove that education is no longer isolated but closely connected to people outside the school like parents and ICT coordinators. Principals are no longer supposed to make decisions on their own. And the target audience also suggest the close connection of learning environments with the society. Another remarkable point of FCL philosophy is that learning environments are not limited to traditional classrooms. Any place can be a learning environment. Designing Innovative Learning Activities is also an exciting part of the process, which I'm looking forward to. In this module we have been given background information about the Future Classroom Lab and its aims. We have discussed J. T. Gatto's "Weapons of Mass Instruction" recently at school. It is apparent that we face a stalemate in this case: The old-fashioned teaching techniques and schools really dumb both teachers and students. On the other hand, considering the facts of our country and society, we cannot do without schools and formal education. So the Module 2 arrived just in time: It is a project that aims to rearrange or reshape traditional classrooms according to the needs of today. It requires a robust technological infrastructure and considerable know-how on teachers' part. FCL stipulates the active participation of students. Therefore the classrooms have to be decorated with movable furniture. They have to be equipped with technological devices. The classrooms have to provide a cozy and comfortable learning environment. If such a classroom and an encouraging and democratic learning environment is provided, we might prove Gatto's arguments wrong. This module has been a quite busy one with endless tasks to complete. I have had several petie nervous breakdowns and my computer joined me from time to time. This course looks like a video game, before you feel happy for completing a certain level, you already feel anxious about what hurdles you will have to overcome next. I changed the design of my padlet and didn't like the new one. I can't go back to the original design, though. It is time consuming. By the way, I realized I write too much, other participants don't seem to run off at the mouth as I do. Anyway, I declare the core of this module "Viva Collaboration!" because collaboration is the most important element for success during designing a learning activity. It is really crucial to have cooperative and creative colleagues during this process. There is one thing that really worries me since the beginning: FCL is a great idea with incredible potential outcomes when put into practice. However, creating scenarios, designing learning activities, using Web2.0 tools are really a lot of work and you feel exhausted just before you start it. This last module covers the assessment part of the process. Now that the learning environments, learning activities and tools are brand new for the 21st century, we can't expect the assessment type to be primitive such as the ones from the 20th century. I missed doing my daily reading and had difficulty in sleeping during the first five days. But this course was worth it. It has been a nourishment to me before the start of the academic year.
