This week, you will be working in groups based upon your chosen disability. During each class, you will be given a set of criterion to follow to construct your own research and find resources to create a disability padlet. On Friday of this week, you will be teaching another group about your disability using the padlet you have created, which will lead into our second edition of the Who Am I? Demystification poster regarding Specific Learning Disabilities.

Tasks: Conduct your own research (I have given you a head start with the resource hub) on each of the subtopics for each day. As always, based on course policy, do not copy and paste. Quote, summarize, and paraphrase. For each subtopic, you will also be required to find two resources (videos, links, websites, pdfs, etc.) to assist and teach others. Provide a brief description for each of your resources as well.

Subtopics: In each subtopic, you will need the following:
- Defining, summarizing, quoting, or paraphrasing to give an understanding of each one.
- Two resources + an explanation of each one.

Assessments to test for dyslexia include testing for phonological awareness, decoding, fluency, comprehension, and rapid naming. These assessments help people see the child's ability and what they struggle with. Children with dyslexia may need accommodation when completing tests and assignments. One example of an accommodation would be reading instructions aloud to the students. Also doing things with formatting like making text larger and putting less information on each page can be useful. Letting these children work in small groups or in another classroom can help limit distractions and help with completing assignments as well.

There are multiple areas where challenges will be for people with dyslexia. They will have trouble reading and keeping up with other students in the classroom. In their personal lives, they may struggle with talking to others and reading menus and articles. They can work through all of these things though. When it comes to emotional regulation it can be hard for students with dyslexia to remain calm and collected when struggling. They may become frustrated and angry. To overcome this we have to talk with our students and remind them that they can take their time and help is available to them. Communication is another hard area for people with dyslexia. Since reading and writing is a challenge for them when talking via text/email it can be hard to communicate what they want to say. They can overcome this by slowing down and using text-to-speech software that allows them to say what they want instead of typing it. Overall, there are ways to overcome all of these challenges and it is important to stay positive.

Some families with multiple children have trouble giving time to each child. The child with dyslexia may get extra help and support causing the other children to feel unimportant and left out. It is important for the family to understand this, take extra time for the other children, and make them feel important. In the home, you can work on helping a child with dyslexia by having them listen to audiobooks and follow along, drilling sight words, and repeating and reviewing their skills.
