Initiative, Referendum, and Recall is the availability of the American people to remove an elected official out of office, repeal legislation, and propose their own laws. This idea first came from the progressives right after the American Industrialization.

Initiative, Referendum, and Recall is used to remove a person from office and during the Progressive Era, many people needed this to take down the very powerful political bosses. Throughout the 20th century, many political figures were corrupt and the progressives wanted to end this while repealing the laws political bosses enacted. This would also allow them to propose their own laws, through initiative, which could greatly support their ideals.

Initiative, referendum, and recall was very successful not only around the Progressive era but also now. Throughout the time that these ideas were introduced, many states began to allow people to call back political leaders and introduce their own ideas as legislation. This means that many people, including leaders that are in office, support the idea.

A connection today is when governor Arnold Schwarzenegger of California was recalled in 2003. This allowed those that opposed the new governor to take him out of office in the hopes of a better governor. The person that became governor after was Jerry Brown who is still there today.
