deviance is an act of behaviour which questions a persons morality of accepted standards. it usually falls out of the norms of what is seen as acceptable. this means to break the rules or at least push them to the limit, meaning sometimes these acts can even be illegal.
one reason that deviance has risen in sport is because of the entertainment factor. for example, fans love it when a brawl occurs in a football match, meaning that the usually the person who is most involved gets more attention from the fans which could be a reason for a player to become more aggressive, as it will get them more fame.

Larry Nassar is a former USA Gymnastics doctor who was found guilty for possession of child sex abuse images and also molesting his patients in the back room of Twistars gymnastics club in Diamondale, Michigan. the number of (known) victims of Larry Nassar has currently grown to 265, with at least 65 of those being set to confront Nassar in court in the last of three sentencing hearings. in the other hearings, Nassar was sentenced to 40-175 years after nearly 160 victims testified that he molested them. Larry Nassar pleaded guilty to three counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct against the girls of which he was supposed to be providing medical care. at least one of these victims were younger than 13, and two of the victims were abused at just 15 or 16 years old. the first victim to speak out was 17 year old Jessica Thomashaw who says that Nassar molested her when she was just 9 years old 'for his own pleasure' and also described him as 'evil'. this was the first on the many victims to come forwards, including Thomshaws older sister, who was molested while studying at Michigan State University. USA Gymnastics says that every director of its board has now resigned in the wake of the scandal as a result of the shame. the US Olympic Committee demanded that the board stepped down or face losing its governing authority.

why are whistle blowers so important?

whistle blowing is the disclosure by someone involved in something of confidential information which relates to either danger, fraud or other illegal/unethical conduct. in the USA gymnastics abuse scandal, the main whistle blower was 17 year old Jessica Thomshaw who was the first victim to come forward and speak out about the abuse she had to go through from Larry Nassar. Whistle blowers are crucial for scandals like this in sport because until somebody speaks out and exposes such information, nothing can be done about it because it is unknown. in this case, the whistle blowing was internal. this means that it was one of the victims themselves that spoke out and helped expose Larry nassar which then gave other victims the courage to come forward and speak out. it is often seen in numerous scandals that they are kept secret for very long time. however, once a whistle blower comes forward, many of whistle blowers and victims also get the confidence to speak out on the scandal about what they know to help get justice. however, sometimes it isn't just the victims who are the whistle blowers. this is because a victim may inform a parent or friend who could then become the whistle blower, or somebody who isn't involved in the scandal at all could overhear some information which they could then expose which would make them the whistle blower.

why did the abuse happen for such a long period of time?

the abuse to the victims of the Larry nassar scandal went on for so long because the victims were made to feel like they were unable to tell anyone about what they are going through. however, this could be for many different reasons. one of which is that the victims may not have felt safe telling others because one of the main people they thought they could trust, former USA Gymnastics doctor larry nassar, was the culprit who was abusing them. because of this, it is likely that the victims had a lot of trust issues with many people around them as they would have no longer knew who they could trust in case something similar occurred again. another possible reason that the abuse went on for so long is that they may have a fear of the consequences of this. this could be because they may be scared that nobody is going to believe them which would leave them to believe that people would just call them liars and attention seekers. also, another big reason that the abuse went on for so long is that the victims may not fully understand what was going on, so they wouldn't know that what was happening to them is not ok. because some of the victims were so young , it is likely that lot of the victims didn't understand that what was happening wasn't aloud and that they needed so tell someone what was happening. also, this abuse may have had many psychological affects of the abuse which is why it was able to go on for so long. these psychological problems include anxiety which could make them feel extremely uncomfortable around others, loss of self-esteem meaning that they don't feel that they are important, PTSD which could have lasting effects on the victims as they could relive the abuse and even possibly suicidal behavior if the effects of the abuse becomes too much for the abuse to handle.
