Why do you want to be a nurse? When did you decide you wanted to be a nurse? Did anyone or anything influence your decision?

Hello, my name is Caterina. I’m 22 years old and i’m studying to become a pediatric nurse. I’m finishing the first year and i’m enjoying everything very much. I took this choice for several reasons. First of all i like the course subjects, that revolve around the healthcare environment, which it has always fascinated me. Secondly, i believe that this is an important path from many points of view. It can help me get to know myself, making me aware of my limitations and strengths. It also gives many satisfactions, not only in the workplace, but also at the human level. It’s very demanding, but even a simple smile of a patient makes any effor go away. I thought a lot before making this decision about my future job. I evaluated many options, without the influence of anyone, and in the end i chose the one most akin to my way of being and my passions. I believe that there’s nothing more beautiful than helping others and being useful to the community. I hope to do this job in the best possible way.

Dialogue

Caterina (nurse): Good morning, how are you feeling today?

Marco: Not so great, i've been having some trouble breathing.

Caterina: I'm sorry to hear that. Did you take your drug as prescribed?

Marco: Yes, i did. But it doesn't seem to be helping much.

Caterina: Okay, i'll make a note of that and i'll say to the doctor, so he can reassess your treatment plan. In the meantime, is there anything else that's been bothering you?

Marco: Yes, i'm feeling very tired and weak.

Caterina: I'll make sure to have your blood work done to see if there are some issues. You can try to rest and stay hydrated.

Marco: Thank you so much, i appreciate your help.

Caterina: We're here to help you feel better. If you have any other problems, don't hesitate to tell us.

In this short dialogue there are two characters, Caterina e Marco. Caterina is a nurse from the Pediatric Hospital “Bambino Gesù”. Jack is a 7-year-old boy who arrived at the hospital with his mother because of breathing problems. The diagnosis is not clear yet; doctors are considering various options. Meanwhile the child is constantly observed and he takes a targeted therapy.

Anaesthesia is a condition in which our body, through various drugs directed at the nervous system, loses sensitivity. In the past, this did not exist, so operations were very quick and patients often did not survive. The first anesthetic was ether, then chloroform, in the 1920s of intravenous induction agents, associated in the 1940s with muscle relaxants. The anaesthesia is divided into local (which affects a small area of the body), regional (involves a larger part) and general (all body is unconscious). Over the years it has become a safe and advanced technique with modern monitoring systems.

What makes a good nurse? What skills are needed? Why do you think you will be a good nurse?

A good nurse has a combination of skills, qualities and knowledge that enable them to provide high-quality care. These include empathy and compassion to understand patients' emotions, effective communication skills, problem-solving abilities to quickly assess situations, attention to detail and flexibility to adapt to new challenges. Additionally, strong leadership and the ability to work well in a team are crucial. A nurse must also be capable of managing stress, staying calm in emergencies and showing resilience in difficult situations. The required skills include knowledge of anatomy, nursing techniques, patient assessment, medication administration and an understanding of pharmacology. Nurses must also be able to educate patients about their health and treatment plans and they need to be culturally aware to provide care that respects the diversity of patients. If you are someone who enjoys helping others, can connect easily with people and demonstrate patience, resilience and a strong sense of responsability, these are all qualities that would make you well-suited to the nursing profession. Being a good nurse requires both technical knowledge and a deep commitment to caring for others.
