The number, pi, sticks with Pi and represents the length of his voyage across the pacific: "I survived 227 days. that's how long my trial lasted, over seven months" (189). The length of Pi's journey is unique because "227" can be turned into the fraction, "22/7." This fraction simplifies to 3.14, the 3 digits commonly used to represent pi (appositive). In an interview, taking place when his book was first published (participle), Yann Martel said that he wanted to use an Indian animal, like a baby elephant or a rhino to accompany Pi; however, Martel wanted Pi's journey to be 227 days long and he wouldn't have been able to justify an herbivore being able to survive at sea for that long.
