Due to the societal values and ideas present during the time of the novel (1930's America) Crooks was heavily discriminated against during his adult life.

“‘You go on get outta my room.

Lennie and George are very close, with George acting as a guardian to Lennie. They do everything together; they always have each other to talk to. On the other hand, Crooks feels very lonely because nobody wants to hang out with him because he is black. He wishes that he had someone who cared about him, and he takes his anger out on Lennie. He is jealous, and wants Lennie to feel what he always feels.

“‘I said s’pose George went into town tonight and you never heard of him no more.’ Crooks pressed forward some kind of private victory. (...) ‘He won’t do it,’ Lennie cried. ‘George wouldn’t do nothing like that’” (Steinbeck 35).

Central Theme of the Novel

So far, the theme of the novel is that those who are weak will suffer or die at the hands of the strong. Other major thematic points are shattered dreams and loneliness. No matter how much you hope or how hard you plan, some dreams never come true. Ties of loyalty and brotherhood should be cherished, for lonesomeness is too often a part of life.

When Lennie tells Crooks about his and George's dream to own their own farm and do what they want on it, Crooks believes that this dream will never happen. Candy jumps in and states that they already have most of the money. When Crooks hears this, he feels hopeful for the boys as they would be now able to venture off on their own. This prompts him to try and be a part of their farm dream. He volunteers to work for free. This small moment makes Crooks feel as if his isolation days may be over. He realizes that Lennie and Candy actually accept him.

"Crooks interrupted brutally. 'You guys is just kiddin’ yourself. You’ll talk about it a hell of a lot, but you won’t get no land...' Candy rubbed his cheek angrily. 'You God damn right we’re gonna do it. George says we are. We got the money right now...' He hesitated. ' . . . If you . . . guys would want a hand to work for nothing—just his keep, why I’d come an’ lend a hand'"(Steinbeck 75 and 76).

For a brief period of time, Crooks felt that he may actually find a place in society where he could be included. However, all this disappears when Curley's wife comes in and starts to complain and insult the men. When Crooks finally stands up and tells her to leave, she threatens to have him lynched. This situation makes Crooks realize that things will likely never look up for him. He loses his hope for a better future, and becomes resigned that he will always be treated as lesser, even by people like Curley's wife (who was never even given a name).

"Crooks seemed to grow smaller, and he pressed himself against the wall... ‘Well, you keep your place then, ******. I could get you strung upon a tree so easy it ain’t even funny.’ Crooks had reduced himself to nothing” (Steinbeck 39).

“‘’Member what I said about hoein’ and doin’ odd jobs?’ ‘Yeah,’ said Candy. ‘I remember.’ ‘Well, jus’ forget it,’ said Crooks. ‘I didn’t mean it. Jus’ foolin’. I wouldn’ want to go no place like that’” (Steinbeck 40).
