All of Fresno Unified and Clovis Unified middle schools got together at Clovis North. This particular Black student Union conference was important to me and a lot of other students because it was a judge free zone. Everybody there was open minded. We played, games, had dance performances, guest speakers, a career fair, listened to music, ate food, and every activity we did was cultured and I think that’s important. For black students it’s important to be around people who look like or people who can relate to you. The feeling of being there was very freeing for a lot of students. Kids who are growing especially middle schoolers thrive to be around people they can be themselves around. At that age that’s when kids are molding themselves the most and if those BSU conferences became a more common experience it would encourage kids to find out more about there identity within there culture.
