Southern Italy, particularly regions like Calabria, Sicily, and Campania, has historically faced challenges with undernutrition, especially in its rural areas. Although Italy is a developed country, significant disparities exist between the wealthy northern regions and the poorer southern regions. These disparities are influenced by environmental, economic, and social factors, contributing to the persistence of undernutrition in certain populations. Explore how environmental, economic, and social factors contribute to the problem and what efforts are being made to combat it.

Malnutrition in Southern Italy, especially in Calabria, Sicily, and Campania, is driven by environmental challenges, poverty, and social inequality.

Rural areas in Southern Italy often face environmental challenges that impact food security. Limited access to fresh produce due to geographic isolation and underdeveloped transportation infrastructure can restrict the availability of nutritious foods. Additionally, environmental degradation and climate-related issues may affect local agriculture, further limiting food variety and quality.

Issues like drought, unemployment, and poor education reduce access to nutritious food. The reliance on cheaper, processed options worsens the situation.

Efforts to combat this include EU agricultural funding, food aid programs, nutrition education, and job creation initiatives. Despite some progress, long-standing economic disparities and environmental challenges continue to limit the effectiveness of these measures in addressing malnutrition in rural and disadvantaged areas.

Southern Italy faces undernutrition due to poor farming conditions, high unemployment, and limited healthcare and education in regions like Calabria, Sicily, and Campania. Economic disparities between Northern and Southern Italy are pronounced, with the southern regions exhibiting higher poverty rates and unemployment levels. Low household incomes can lead to reduced food budgets, making it difficult for families to afford a diverse and balanced diet. This economic strain is particularly evident among the elderly, who may have limited financial resources and access to social support systems .

Efforts to combat this include promoting sustainable agriculture, food aid, and improving healthcare, education, and infrastructure.

In Southern Italy, regions such as Calabria, Sicily and Campania face challenges related to malnutrition, especially in rural areas. These disparities compared to the North are caused by environmental factors (poor soil quality, climate change), economic factors (high unemployment, poverty) and social factors (poor education and infrastructure). To combat the problem, agricultural development programs, nutritional education and infrastructure improvement are being implemented.

Collaborative efforts between government agencies, non-profit organizations, and local communities are essential to implement these strategies effectively and sustainably.

Calabria, a region in southern Italy, has struggled with undernutrition, particularly among children and elderly populations. Several factors contribute to undernutrition in Calabria, including economic factors, food insecurity, geographic isolation, lack of food education, limited access to healthcare services.

Especially, social determinants play a crucial role in undernutrition. Factors such as low educational attainment, social isolation, and inadequate health literacy can negatively influence dietary choices and nutritional status. Elderly individuals living alone or with limited social networks are especially vulnerable, as they may lack the support needed to maintain proper nutrition .
