Jackson - I am using inspirational quotes for decoding and morphology practice. It's going okay, but I really feel like I need legitimate training and am putting in an enormous amount of my personal time and energy into learning this myself in a piecemeal way. I am also trying to incorporate Orton-Gillingham with my 'lows' and again, putting in an enormous amount of my time and energy without feel truly competent.

Shift 3-Lexical System

I have been learning about the lexical system in another professional group. This makes so much sense! In upper ele, students will often say a word based on the beginning sound and plow through the word and it makes no sense in that context. This shift addresses how to get all systems involved so the students can slow down and put it all together. Sometimes kids have a lower lexical quality and that is something we need to help support and give them foundational skills so they have that automatic retrieval.

Jackson- I am making a language shift to be as explicit as possible, using the academic vocabulary myself, and expecting them to use the academic vocabulary as well.

Sietsema- I have been implementing zoo phonics motions into my Heggerty lessons to help my students grasp and identify the sound of the word we are trying to identify or manipulate. Carly told me she saw a teacher do this to help when we first started doing ending sound but I have just taken it a step farther and do it through all of our sound substitution and manipulation
