Malassadas Recipe
Ingredients:
1 kilo of wheat flour
50 grams of bread yeast
1 dessert spoon salt
1 tablespoon sugar
1 cup warm water
12 eggs

How to Prepare:
Put the flour, salt and sugar in a bowl.
Mix the yeast in the warm water and put it in the bowl.
The eggs (add eggs little by little).
Put to rise, fry the spoonfuls in hot oil.

The region of Trás-Dos-Montes, inspired by the customs of the Celts who lived in the northeast of Portugal in antiquity, keeps alive the tradition that, since 2019, is a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The men from the village of Podence, 30 km from Bragança, dress up as Caretos, diabolical figures representing the chaos that ends winter and brings fertility in spring. According to tradition, they wear masks with frightening horns, colorful clothes with fringes and rattles attached to the waist, usually inherited from the family.

For three days, the Caretos liven up the streets of the village, jumping and playing, while announcing the end of winter. It is a more intimate Carnival, where friends receive the Caretos in their homes. Revelers and masked people join the procession, not forgetting the traditional parades of “matrafonas” (men dressed as women), “cabeçudos” (resembling the giant puppets of Olinda) and “kings of carnival”.

It is known as the most Portuguese Carnival in Portugal, and it is also the biggest. Torres Vedras Carnival receives around half a million visitors during six days of festivities, and has been taking place since 1930. The parade is animated with popular Portuguese music and at the end there is a beautiful fireworks show.

In 2023, the party takes on a special tone with the theme: 100 years of Carnival in Torres Vedras, and special celebrations of its centenary. The revelry takes place between the 17th and 22nd of February.
