Wales/Pamplona/Skiing - I made a few mood boards, consisting of my initial 3 ideas on place/location in which to base my project around. I decided my first action would be to pick 3 places which hold personal significance to me; skiing (Sestriere, Italy), Pamplona (Spain) and Wales, where I live. I picked some photos of which I had when I went to the locations, and found other images connected to the places.

I researched the letter p in a more literary manner, focussing on the history and use in different languages. I'm interested in its origin in the Phoenician symbol pe, which was adopted by the Greeks as pi (Π). I could look at how I can link this to a place or location, as I am fascinated with Ancient Greek culture and history. I was also intrigued by its stance in the English language as a silent letter in some words. I think if I explored this in the context of place and location, I could produce some interesting imagery to communicate how the letter appears vs sounds in the English language. However, I would need to consider how to relate this to a space/place/location.

This is a basic idea/sketch which I could possibly develop work from. However, I don't like how it is not obviously a letter 'P', so is more conceptual. I soon decided after creating this letter that I would reject this specific pathway and idea and move to one I was more excited about.

After considering even more ideas and comprising a long list of new ideas without being precious about the final outcome, I have decided to change my course of action and now explore the place/space of where I used to work - as a painter and decorator back at home with my mum. I will create a mind map to discuss further ideas and plan to recreate the droplets of paint that my mum would often trail behind her by accident while in work. This is a memory and brings a sense of sentiment to me which is why I've chosen this route instead.

I received some feedback from my final idea on 21/10/20 critical assessment. From my comments, I aim to further consider a more complementary and interesting colour palette related to my concept perhaps in a different way. As well as this, I may re-evaluate my chosen letterform and choose one that conveys my idea of 'mess' a little bit better. I will also play with letter placement on the image; possibly moving the letter so it isn't centred neatly on the page so it looks less uniformed and more messy looking.

I decided to go for this experiment that I made - I feel as though it is more in line with my concept in terms of expressing the idea of messiness. It also looks like someone has attempted to wipe away the tail of the p - linking to how the paint in which is spilled is cleaned up from the floor/surface. I increased the size of the image so it fills the page more, as well as this I moved the image so it's off centre. I will now explore some more colour palettes which I can relate to my concept as well as look aesthetically pleasing.

I remember spending a lot of time on a new build of flats at a location in Wrexham (where I'm from). We worked together here over a period of over a year, where much time was spent with just my mum and I alone in the house. When we finally got to the final colours, we used Johnstone's Pale Stone paint as well as Farrow & Ball's black eggshell paint on the wood. I have lots of memories here relating to my concept and find that these colours hold significance. I could take these colours and apply them to my image.

I've applied the colours mentioned to my final letter. I decided to use the stone colour as the background as it was the colour used on the walls in the flats. I then used the eggshell colour for the letter as we used it for the woodwork, therefore took up less space in the flats.

I remembered this article from the summer project, which discusses gender in typography. I think it's useful for me to read over topics like this to underlie my future designs, and also to consider if/how my own letterforms could play a part in political and societal topics.

In the book - 'Handwritten, expressive lettering in the digital age', Websters discusses the art of 'scrawling' - which is to 'write, draw, or mark awkwardly, hastily, or carelessly'. This is an attempt to create expressive lines and lettering that can often not be repeated. I attempted the while constructing my letters. I decided to carelessly let my paint drip/physically paint in a careless manner in order to create a range of outcomes. This is what led me to my developed idea, where I was less precious about the final outcome, and decided to be more hasty in which I splattered the paint onto the page. This creates an improvised and expressive final outcome.

Book - 'Handwritten expressive lettering in the digital age'.
I noticed some similarities in the way I was working to some examples of lettering in this book. In particular, handwritten typography known as 'scrawling'. Here, I found this example which I find to be of similar nature as my own in terms of how the letters look (paint/ink spills/drops) and how they create a sense of mood and atmosphere. As commented below, in this case the typography seems violent, where the letters are sprawled across the page. I'm interested in this piece and how - although similar in appearance - using the same technique can create different moods.
