Overview- AI in Education

When considering education as an industry, most think of K-12 schooling, Undergraduate programs, and Graduate programs. Additionally, I would like to incorporate tutoring, test preparation, and professional development programs into our scope of education as an industry. When we consider the impact Artificial Intelligence has had, and will continue to have, on the Education Industry moving forward, many experts believe we will need to change the way we think about education and what we prioritize for students. Currently, AI is being used in all sectors of the education industry listed above- but to varying degrees. For example, higher education programs have been quicker to implement AI technology compared to K-12 programs. I have chosen this industry because, as a student and as someone who would like to pursue a career in academia, the future of the industry will directly impact me. Additionally, the changes that happen to our process of educating future generations will have a direct impact on everyone when those people are entering adulthood and are tasked with running society. In this Padlet Wall, I will address the pros and cons of current applications of AI in the education industry, future trends and speculation, ethical considerations, and the societal impact of the technology.

Education- Intelligent Tutoring Systems

Intelligent Tutoring Services are web-based tutoring tools that utilize Artificial Intelligence to analyze each individual student's strengths and weaknesses, providing “targeted remediation and tracking of progress.” Largely, this software utilizes machine learning to analyze things such as whether the answer provided by a student is correct, how long it takes for a student to answer a question, and the learning pace of the student. It also uses Natural Language Processing in order to understand the human inputs and generate responses. This technology has been utilized to help improve student test scores in K-12 education, and has been a useful tool for many students and teachers; however, many teachers, such as my mom, have noted that the technology has its limitations when trying to foster collaborative and social skills in younger students due to less face-to-face instruction. Personally, I think that this can be a very useful technology- and I have personally used ITS technology to help me study for exams in the past; however, I believe this technology should be kept out of Elementary schooling. I believe cultivating students' social and collaborative skills should be prioritized over test scores.

Automated Grading and Assessment

Automated Grading and Assessment systems are Artificial Intelligence systems that utilize Machine Learning and Natural Language Processing technology to grade and analyze student assignments, exams, and writing samples. This technology can grade objective assignments such as multiple choice answers, by simply comparing student answers to the answers it has been fed as “correct,” as well as more complex answers such as short writing responses and essays, that more require more subjective grading. This technology can be very useful to educators in decreasing the amount of time they need to spend grading, allowing them more time to plan and teach their lessons. On the contrary, this technology has some drawbacks, particularly with student writing samples, as the technology still struggles to fully understand human language to the level humans do. I think that this technology is a great implementation of AI into the classroom, as it does not have any direct drawbacks to student education when implemented properly.

Administrative Task Automation

Administrative Task Automation is the process of delegating mundane and repetitive tasks to Artificial Intelligence-based software that can utilize Machine Learning, Natural Language processing, and Intelligent Document Processing technology to complete said tasks without human intervention. This technology can do data entry, send emails, and pay invoices- all of which are done in the education industry. I personally have a lot of experience with this backend work in education, as I work in the administrative office of a school district part-time. Part of my job is helping to create “Bids” for teachers and schools to order from, including anything from educational support materials to school lunches. While automating the compilation and creation of a Bid would be difficult, many of the more mundane tasks, such as sending purchase orders to companies or processing invoices, could be automated using AI. This implementation would be a huge help, as it could result in faster order placement and shipment, allowing teachers and schools to receive their orders faster.

Future Trends and Ethical Considerations

The education industry is a large machine, involving all levels of government, teachers, administrative staff, students, parents, and more. When we look to the future of AI implementation in the education industry, I believe that all of these perspectives are important to take into consideration to continue to foster effective learning environments. When we consider the technologies mentioned, we can see how they have large-scale benefits in the industry, such as improving test scores with Intelligent Tutoring Services, Automated grading systems giving teachers more time to teach and less time spent grading assignments, and Administrative task automation allowing for the back end of the education industry to run much more efficiently- benefiting all involved. However, we must note the ethical considerations of AI utilization. A study out of MIT researched the effects of AI technologies in education on human brain activity. The study followed different groups of students tasked with writing an essay, some with the help of AI and some without, and tracking brain activity. Then, the students in each group were asked to rewrite their paper, but those who used AI could not use it for their second attempt, and vice versa. The conclusion was that “The first group remembered little of their own essays, and showed weaker alpha and theta brain waves, which likely reflected a bypassing of deep memory processes,” while “The second group, in contrast, performed well, exhibiting a significant increase in brain connectivity across all EEG frequency bands. This gives rise to the hope that AI, if used properly, could enhance learning as opposed to diminishing it.” With this research in mind, I think it is important for us to remember that AI is a new technology, and we need to further research the most effective methods of its implementation- especially in such an important industry to our society like education.

Societal Impact

The Societal impact of Artificial Intelligence is going to be something humans study for decades, likely utilizing Artificial Intelligence to help with the research. When considering how AI affects society in conjunction with the education industry, we can consider employment, privacy, equity, and other things, such as educational outcomes. When it comes to employment, the education industry hires many different types of professionals, from teachers, administrative staff, paraprofessionals, custodians, food service workers, and more, in order to make the industry run. This high level of employment volume sets the stage for a lot of mundane, paper-pushing tasks that Administrative Task Automation could help streamline. We can also see positive effects in educational equity, as Automated Grading software can help decrease biases in grading, which could positively affect student outcomes. Examples like this can help to increase technological advancements in a well-established industry, leading to a more efficient hiring system, removing human biases in reviews of student performance, and overall creating lasting positive societal impacts, rooted in better educational outcomes for students. Personally, I see the societal impacts of AI being rooted in the changes we see in the education industry. Future human development and technological advances have their foundation laid in the education of future generations. Development cannot stop because AI has made us lazy; we must utilize it as a tool to educate new generations.

Reflection

Diving into the education industry in conjunction with AI has been very interesting. With both of my parents being educators, and myself being a student who works in the education industry, I was able to take multiple personal perspectives and really see how this technology was going to affect all aspects of the industry. It was challenging to find much about the specifics surrounding administrative task automation in education; however, when I brought in my own personal perspectives working in the industry, it clicked much better. This research has been influenced by a perspective on AI, in both positive and negative ways. I see this technology as having huge upside potential in helping students learn, if implemented properly; however, if implemented incorrectly, I now see how detrimental the technology can be to future generations.
