This padlet has been designed as a resource for Victorian visual art teachers to teach a culturally responsive curriculum.

In particular, I have identified a real need in providing teachers some strategies to address the Aboriginal and Torres Stait Islander AITSL's teaching standard and as such, some of these resources are tailored particularly to First Nations ways of knowing. They are by no means an exhaustive list and I mean this as a collaborative resource for my fellow teachers to add to with ideas for lessons.

A culturally responsive pedagogy can be applied to all diverse artists and social justice causes as a remedy to replication, cultural appropriation, apathy and low engagement. When student are encouraged to create through experiential exploration, their ideas will be original and lead to authentic art experiences.

I would like to begin by acknowledging the Boon Wurrung people, the traditional custodians of the land on which I live and pay my respects to their Elders, past, present and emerging. I extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Sovereignty was never ceded... always was, always will be.

I am in my backyard, eyes closed, listening. There is a stillness - the rustling of the leaves gently blowing in the breeze. A magpie perched on our fence, whistling. I love their call. I listen and hear the reply.
In the distance I can hear the train approaching the station. With a jolt the stillness all but disappears. The magpie flies..

In the 8 ways resource, suggestions for teaching first nations students include creative open-ended assignments, outdoor classes to connect with country and celebrating contemporary indigenous culture. Students making meaningful connections with the country on which they live and study through an acknowledgement of country and engaging with the flora still used by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders today.
