Sonia's mother was a nurse at the local hospital, and despite distributing thousands of injections, she refused to give Sonia her insulin shots in fear of hurting her. Unfortunately, only two years later Sonia lost her father to alcoholism, something she says no one but himself could have saved him from. Her Abuelita and cousin Nelson were her other half, every Saturday spent at Abuelita's of Titi's was full of food, conversation, and family. Her little brother Junior was quiet, but played basketball throughout school and eventually became a doctor in Syracuse.
